it's a love thing free b world (c60 from hospital productions)
this is a collaboration between dominick fernow of prurient and his father tom fernow, who also records under the name domstar for hospital. and actually that's the main reason i got it. the idea of collaborating with my own father is so foreign to me, i had to listen to see what theirs sounded like. first off, it is actual music, albeit a very weird sort of music. the first side features the most collaborative tracks, and is marked by contrasts, often a chaotic element will be paired with something more sedate: like a thoughtful keyboard melody over erratic percussion, or an improvised sounding melody over slow, regular percussion. the majority of the collaborative tracks seem to have a thoughtful sort of atmospheric feel to them, good staring at the ceiling music but with enough interesting/odd elements to hold your attention. side b is split, five tracks of dominick on his own and five of tom on his own. they cover a wide range of emotion as well, lost and dark on some tracks and more playful on others.. all the tracks seem to evoke a scene, if only that of the person playing it.. the second to last track, 'sharp rust' has a dark sound to it and one slow minimal part to it where it seems as though the person playing [dominick in this case] almost can't see the point of playing anymore; a depressing sort of pause between notes is the best way i can describe it. and then what about the name, 'it's a love thing'? is it a plain statement of fact or a self conscious shrug? i guess that depends on what the concerned parties think of it themselves. i just wish i could do something like this with my father. anyway, on the whole an interesting and listenable release, nice artwork by tom fernow also.
