Ultima (also known as Baroque) was invented by Roger Abbott in the 1960's. Only the King captures by displacement, the remainder of the pieces use other methods.
I first read about Ultima at the Chess Variant Pages, here. The variety of capture methods interested me enough to make a custom board to play the game on. Below is a crude representation of my board (at the time of creating this page there was no way to get photos of the actual set into my computer), with coordinates added.

a8: Coordinator, b8: Long-leaper, c8: Chameleon, d8: Withdrawer, e8: King, f8: Chameleon, g8: Long-Leaper, h8: Immobilizer
a7-h7: Pinching Pawns
a2-h2: Pinching Pawns
a1: Immobilizer, b1: Long-leaper, c1: Chameleon, d1: King, e1: Withdrawer, f1: Chameleon, g1: Long-Leaper, h1: Coordinator

While one can play Ultima with an orthodox chessboard, I figured it would be easier to learn and play with painted wooden checkers featuring pictographs, so as to avoid the confusion for people accustomed to orthochess. To further distance my set from traditional chess, I used the wild, headache-inducing colour combination of ultra blue and fire red, as opposed to plain old black and white.
RoB Patey and myself have played several enjoyable games thus far. I found it fairly easy to learn and adjust to the game early on. Of course, my strategy is no doubt flawed, but such things usually take considerable time.
For notation of Ultima games I use a sort of long algebraic, where the beginning and destination squares are listed for each move(e.g. b2b4). I think the easiest way to represent an immobilized piece committing suicide would be to note the piece's square, followed by an x (e.g. d5x).
