Coco Lee was born in Hong Kong in January, 1976, the youngest of 3 sisters. At the age of 10, she emigrated from Hong Kong to San Francisco with her mother and sisters. Although she spoke no English at the time, Coco quickly made the transition to her new surroundings: She graduated her 5th grade class with top honors, despite having only been in the U.S. for a year!
Coco dedicated herself to her academic studies: by her senior year in high school she had been voted class President 3 years in a row, as well as having won the titles of Miss Teen Chinatown and Winter Ball Princess. Her only dream was to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a physician.
Following High School, Coco decided to take a make a trip to Hong Kong to meet her mother and sisters, who were already there vacationing. At the urging of her mother, Coco entered the TVBS Talent Search contest, primarily in hopes of winning some money to pay for some damages which she had caused to her to her mother's car in a traffic mishap. To Coco's surprise, she won 2nd place in the contest, even though she was the only contestant to sing in English (a cover of Whitney Houston's "Run to You"). Coco was spotted by a talent scout in this contest, and was soon thereafter signed to a contract with Capital Artists.
Starting in 1993, Coco made a series of recordings for the Fancy Pie label, all of which were very successful in Taiwan and put her on the verge of stardom. Sony Records became very impressed with Coco and bought out her contract with Fancy Pie in 1996, feeling that they had a future superstar on their hands. This was the major turning point in Coco's career, and after her first Sony CD was released, Asia had a new Superstar!
From 1996 until the present, Coco has released numerous albums on the SONY Taiwan label, each of which has cemented her stature as Asia's greatest female pop-star; however, success has continued to elude Coco in the U.S., where, despite the release of her English language debut in 2000, she remains largely unknown outside the Chinese-american community. All of us Coco fans are hoping that this will soon change, especially with the imminent release of her second U.S. album - let's keep our fingers crossed! Coco is a unique and wonderfully talented artist, and she deserves our undying support! Go Coco!!!
