“Shit! Brooke! What am I going to do?” Tears started to pour down my face:
“I’m so dead. Oh my god!” Brooke stared at the stick, which was positive:
“You have to go to the doctor, Kate. Make sure that it’s correct.” I nodded, wiping my tears:
“I know. But, if it is right, what the hell am I going to do? I can’t have a baby!” She hugged me:
“I know. We’ll figure it out. But, first, let’s go to the health center. Come on. Don’t put this off.” I grabbed my jacket and we left.
An hour later, my worst fear was confirmed. I was pregnant. 4 weeks. I collapsed onto the couch and started sobbing. I didn’t know what to do. I had to talk to Nick. I picked up the phone and dialed his number:
“Please be home. Please be home. Please be home.” The phone rang 4 times and then his answering machine picked up. I slammed the phone down:
“Damnit!!” I found his cell phone number and dialed furiously. Someone answered right away:
“Yo! Nick’s phone. Who’s this?” I sighed:
“Hi AJ. It’s Katelin. Can I talk to Nick please?”
“Hey baby! Yeah, the shit head is right here. Hold on.” Nick grabbed the phone from AJ, angrily:
“Hey! How are you?” I started sobbing again:
“Nick, what the hell am I going to do?”
“Whoa! Slow down, girl! What’s going on?” I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down:
“I just found out that I’m pregnant.” Silence. He obviously didn’t know what to say. Finally, I heard him sigh:
“I’m so sorry, honey. I wish I knew something to tell you. But this is something that you need to figure out by yourself.”
“I know. I already know what I have to do. I just don’t know where or how…” I heard Nick swallowing hard:
“You’re going to get an abortion?”
“I have to, Nick. I can’t have a baby now. It would ruin everything. And, plus, it’s Rob’s…” I trailed off, thinking about that. No way would I be a mother to that asshole’s baby. Plus, my parents would most definitely cut me off from everything. This was just too much for me to handle. I snapped out of my trance when I heard Nick trying to get my attention:
“Katelin! Are you there?”
“Yeah. I’m here. What am I going to do, Nick? I need you here with me.” He sighed:
“You know I would rush up there in a second but I have things to do here. I want to be there for you, Kate, really, but I can’t get out of stuff here.”
“I know. I don’t want you to drop everything and come here. I understand that you have stuff to do. I’m just so confused, Nick.” Nick had an idea:
“Katelin, let me help you. Find out how much it costs and everything and I’ll pay for it.” I was so surprised:
“No, Nick. I couldn’t let you do that.”
“Kate, I don’t mind at all. You know that. Please let me help you.” I got angry, for some reason:
“No Nick! You don’t have to do this anymore, okay? I’m not your charity case anymore!”
“Katelin, what are you talking about? You know I don’t feel that way about you. You can’t afford to do this by yourself and I know you don’t want to call Rob. Please, just let me help you. I’m sending you money. If you send it back, I’ll just do it again.” I sighed:
“Whatever, Nick. I’ve got to go.” With that, I hung up the phone.
