Patience Rewarded
My Shawl
Here's a picture of me wearing the bell-pattern shawl I knitted. It took almost three months! To take on such a project is surely to cultivate patience. You begin with only a couple of stitches, then keep increasing, the rows becoming longer and longer, the pattern emerging like a mystery, ever-growing. Late in the evenings, as the nights became cool, summer passing into autumn, I would start another row, the shawl spreading over my lap. Completed, it lies tucked away in my closet. I take it out now and then, sometimes just to conjure up the memories of the process, the relentless motion toward something that once was nothing, a ball of yarn, not even an idea.
