Lesson One

Tuning up and Proper positions

In this lesson, we'll learn how to tune your guitar properly and some positions for playing your guitar in.

In order to tune your guitar you'll need an outside note from an outside source like a piano or another guitar. In this case you can use the flash file I have posted on this website. Click the link below (you must have the flash player). They start with the bottom string or the fattest string on your guitar and go up to the skinniest or top string.

This particular tuning is E-A-D-G-B-e. This is standard tuning, however, it is not the only way to tune a guitar. I encourage you, after you familiarize yourself with E-A-D-G-B-e, to try other tunings. In this lesson and all the other beginning lessons, we'll stick to this one.

As far as positions go, everyone is comfortable in a different one. I can't really tell you to only sit in a certain way and only play in a certain way. You have to find the "sweet spot" for yourself, but for beginners I'll give some tips:

·Try not to slouch if you're sitting down.
·Holding the guitar closer to your body makes it easier to play.
·Right now it probably feels weird to the muscles in your hand to grip a guitar, but   they do loosen up over time and it becomes a natural feeling.
·Practice standing up as well as sitting so you'll get used to both.
