1. Integrity and reliability are the most important quality that a public employee especially that of a politician should maintain otherwise the institution gets corrupted. 2. Poor immigrants are the greatest investment a country like Canada should bring in for they are motivated by dreams that money immigrants already have. We brought (in) lots of those money immigrants in the 80s from Hong Kong and surrounding areas, most settled in BC, did they bring their money to Canada ? No, they fried us with our own oil and most of the locals moved to nearby towns where the cost of living is much lower than where those so called investors settled.  Would you want to know more and why? Houston Texans Star - DJ Reader On A Mission To Tackle Kidney Disease

Houston, TX, December 16, 2017 – David Vernon Reader Jr. or 'DJ' as he is called among his adoring family, friends and fans, has made quite a name for himself in only his second season in the NFL. As the replacement for five-time Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork, Reader, a starter for every game, has amassed 45 tackles, three for losses, one sack and the season isn't even over yet. Reader is on a mission to make big plays off the field as well by spreading awareness about kidney disease, a cause near and dear to his heart. His father, David Reader Sr. died of kidney failure at the age of 51 nearly four years ago, the summer before his junior year at Clemson University in 2014. To help shed light on this devastating disease, Reader participated in the leagues "My Cause, My Cleats" campaign, designing his cleats in black, white and orange camouflage prints with the words, "RIP David Reader Sr." printed near the ankle. DJ Reader is available for interviews and commentary upon request.  12.23.17

I wanted to follow up with some additional findings

I wanted to follow up with some additional findings released today from the Global Business Monitor study undertaken by international financing provider, Bibby Financial Services (BFS). According to this year’s study, Canadian SMEs admit they’ve suffered from bad debt over the past year, while many struggle to collect payments from customers on time stalling cashflow. The study also shows that Canadian SMEs cite high interest rates as the greatest difficulty to accessing external finance. While many Canadian SME’s expect business growth, they still face ongoing challenges:  48 percent of Canadian SMEs say that collecting payments from customers on time tends to be the most problematic aspect of managing their cashflow.  31 percent say hey’ve suffered bad debt over the past year with an average write-off of $49,000 CAD. 55 percent cite high interest rates as the greatest difficulty to accessing external finance. Below is a news release with more information. Let us know if you’d be interested in speaking with President at BFS Canada, Calum Williamson to gain more insight into these findings and how Canadian SMEs are handling these challenges.  Best,   Whitney 10.28.17

Social media has changed

Social media has changed the way companies advertise their goods and services. At a symposium held at a wholesalers/retailers convention in late spring of this year, the subject shifted to a growing populace of social networkers whose sites have garnered followers in the hundreds of thousands to the millions. The question: Can these armies of followers be motivated by their "Generals" to become consumers? If yes, can the effectiveness be quantified? To find out, a consortium of companies organized a SNAG (Social Network Army Generals) contest which launched on October 17, 2017 .  Anyone with over 25,000 followers on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook may enter. Sixteen finalists will be chosen to compete for a grand prize which includes a cameo in a movie or TV series, with bonuses and potential royalties exceeding six figures for a week's worth of networking! To learn more about the SNAG contest, go to www.SNAGcontest.com or contact Esteban Balboa at Esteban@SNAGcontest.com.  Please let me know if I may schedule an interview with Esteban Balboa.

Ligne Roset’s latest 2017 collection

Ligne Roset’s latest 2017 collection is available in-stores locally at Ligne Roset - 197 Young , H3C 2E9 MONTREAL . The furniture and lifestyle brand offers high-end, creative designs for every room. Previewed earlier this year at Maison + Objet Paris, below are selects from the new collection. Please let me know if you would like hi-res images, more info, or if you’re looking for something specific. Are any of these a fit for you? Thank you, Alyssa Seating that stands out – living room introductions

Cover 1 and Cover 2, designed by Marie Christine Dorner, utilize an automated sewing robot to create intricate stitching and tufting patterns. The upholstery freely floats atop an all-foam base. Cover 1 (left) is a modern take on a chesterfield. Cover 2 (right) offers a ‘lighter’ version with a very different geometric, more contemporary design. Lines intersect effortlessly to create squares, diamonds, and stripes. Both are available in sofa and loveseat styles.

Riga , designed by Eric Jourdan, is a modern take on the traditional wing chair. Breaking away from the stiff and static feel of the traditional wing chair, Jourdan worked to soften the lines and breathe life and dynamism into the collection. Available in armchair and loveseat styles, Riga features an exterior shell that envelops the back and seat cushions.

Amédée is a sofa and armchair combination, designed around a lumbar support which is quilted and stitched just like the bucket seats of the finest Italian automobiles. Designed by Marie Christine Dorner, the armchair is available with swiveling base, and a footstool is offered for when it’s time to relax.

Evangelos Vasileiou is revisiting the 1950s with his Humphrey armchair. Accompanied by its footrest, it becomes a chaise lounge. The seat appears to float in the air, suspended from a slim, elegant steel frame. 10.05.17

High end dreaming – bedroom introductions

In Ultime, Philippe Nigro has designed a bed which is very welcoming in appearance. The headboard and frame are covered in foam, successfully achieving the feat of being generous, soft, welcoming and very comfortable.

The Entrèves collection, designed by Marie Christine Dorner, includes a nightstand and dresser. The dresser features push-catch drawers while the nightstand features open shelves. The design allows for great flexibility in terms of positioning. Multiple pieces can be arranged to create a number of configurations to best fit any space.

Creative lighting introductions

The Asola pendant light was inspired by the 70s and 80s. The design features a series of perforated steel cylinders nestled inside one another. The Mold pendant light is made from concrete poured into a mold. The shape highlights negative space.

The Cinétique floor lamp features an articulated counterbalance system, which makes it possible to have a multitude of positions and orientations of the light source. The Spok floor lamp can be extended in order to adjust the height. 10.05.17

My name is Susan and I'm a music publicist

My name is Susan and I'm a music publicist. I'm working with Saskatchewan folk-rock group Gunner & Smith for their second full-length album release. Titled  Byzantium  it was produced by Andrija Tokic of Nashville - the producer behind Grammy-winning band Alabama Shakes and their debut album Boys & Girls. Tokic is known for bringing in the live feel of classic Muscle Shoals, Stax, and Atlantic recordings from the 1960s-70s. He flew to Saskatchewan , Canada to record the Gunner & Smith sessions with a full band live off the floor straight to analog tape. The album was released Sept 22, 2017 , along with a 20+ show Canadian tour.  On  Byzantium  the songs simmer and seethe with a newfound brooding energy that looks at the darker sides of love, loss, and humanity. Inspired by Townes Van Zant, Neil Young, and Pink Floyd, Gunner & Smith considers this album their indie folk/rock, post-David Bowie  blues. Gunner & Smith (i.e. Geoff Smith) is playing a solo show in Montreal on Saturday, October 14th 9 pm at Grumpy's Bar (1242 rue Bishop). Would you please add this to your community events listings online? And would you like to interview Geoff in advance of the Guelph show or at the show? Employers complain that graduates are not ready for work. Stanford University studies indicate students are overloaded and under-prepared. So exactly what should we teach young people in an age where Dr. Google has an answer for everything; humans are living longer; the traditional professions disappear while new ones are created; international mobility is drastically increasing population diversity; terrorism, environmental threats and inequality need our collective attention; and robots and gene editing are coming, requiring us to re-examine the very core of what it means to be human?

The Global Teacher Bloggers are pioneers and innovators in fields such as technology integration, mathematics coaching, special needs education, science instruction, and gender equity. C.M. Rubin Founder of CMRubinWorld asked them to reflect on these questions: Do you believe curriculum needs to be more relevant for a 21st century world? If you had the power to change the school curriculum, what would you change?

"We need to develop a generation of critical thinkers, collaborators, communicators, environmentalists and ethical IT users," writes Rashmi Kathuria in India . "The content of the news in the last few months, and indeed years, provides clear and loud evidence for the fact that our education system is failing," notes Miriam Mason-Sesay, who believes "division, hatred and bigoted fearfulness are fostered seemingly unchallenged, and our education system has not prepared our youngsters to evaluate the veracity of so many claims." Craig Kemp in Singapore wants "more emphasis on lifelong learning skills than on curriculum content," and Elisa Guerra Cruz's curriculum would be focused on "passion projects, aimed at gaining knowledge and abilities, but also at discovering whatever fires a student's heart,"  Read the full article here The Global Teacher Bloggers have founded schools, written curricula, and led classrooms in 16 different countries that stretch across every populated continent on earth. CMRubinWorld's Top Global Teachers are: Rashmi Kathuria, Jim Tuscano, Craig Kemp, Jasper Rijpma, Elisa Guerra, Pauline Hawkins, Maarit Rossi, Vicki Davis, Miriam Mason-Sesay, Shaelynn Fransworth, Carl Hooker, Adam Steiner, Warren Sparrow, Nadia Lopez, Richard Wells, Joe Fatheree, Kazuya Takahashi, and Abeer Qunaibi CMRubinWorld launched in 2010 to explore what kind of education would prepare students to succeed in a rapidly changing globalized world. Its award-winning series, The Global Search for Education, is a highly regarded trailblazer in the renaissance of 21st century education, and occupies a widely respected place in the pulse of key issues facing every nation and the collective future of all children. It connects today's top thought leaders with a diverse global audience of parents, students and educators. Its highly readable platform allows for discourse concerning our highest ideals and the sustainable solutions we must engineer to achieve them. C. M. Attitudes regarding the legalization of marijuana

Attitudes regarding the legalization of marijuana still differ. Sober since 1996, Ben Cort joined the drug policy conversation at the national level 5 years ago after having spent a decade inside the drug and alcohol addiction treatment field. Today, this speaker, author and expert on marijuana/drug issues, is a respected consultant to the industry as well as several NFL teams; questioning the notion that industrialization is the key to safe, regulated products. His soon-to-be-released book, Weed, Inc: The Truth About THC, the Pot Lobby, and the Commercial Marijuana Industry, challenges popular opinions on this subject, and his passion on the intersection of recovery and public policy makes him a frequent guest in the media. Justice Centre appears before Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage to testify re: Charter impact of M-103

OTTAWA : The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF.ca) will appear before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage Wednesday, September 27, to explain the potential impact of Bill M-103 ("Systemic racism and religious discrimination") on Charter rights. The Justice Centre's Litigation Manager, Jay Cameron, will appear before the Standing Committee between 3:30 P.M. and 5:30 P.M. in the Wellington Building , room 415.  Other witnesses include Fr. Raymond J. de Souza, Canadian Council of Imams, Council for Muslims Facing Tomorrow, and International Christian Voice. On March 23rd 2017 , the Canadian House of Commons passed M-103, a non-binding Motion that condemns religious discrimination, while particularly highlighting "Islamophobia". The term "Islamophobia" is not defined in the Motion. As outlined in its Brief to Parliament, the Justice Centre writes: Attempting to "completely eliminate racism and religious discrimination including "Islamophobia" in Canada 's multicultural society would require government oppression and control of not only speech and expression, but thought itself. In proposing to eliminate racism, discrimination and "Islamophobia", the government necessarily makes itself the sole arbiter of what constitutes those things, and tasks itself with their elimination. If M-103 is legislatively codified, the unconstitutional infringement of freedom of thought, belief, expression and religion is inevitable. The Justice Centre will make three key observations to the Committee: The Motion is vague and lacks the certainty for proper legislative recommendations. The state has no business in attempting to control the minds and thoughts of its citizens, as is implicitly proposed by the Motion – the Charter stands as a guardian between the citizen and oppressive state action. The term "Islamophobia," interpreted to mean an "irrational fear of Islam," is not capable of legislative prevention. Jay Cameron will be available for media at the Wellington Building following Wednesday's Committee proceedings. Education Minister ignores Alberta laws which support parental rights to be fully informed

CALGARY : The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (www.JCCF.ca) today challenged assertions made by Alberta Education Minister David Eggen. As stated in an article in today's Edmonton Journal: Although privacy law and the Alberta Teachers' Association's code of conduct would, in many cases, prevent school staff from disclosing a student's gender identity or sexual orientation to their family members without the student's permission, Eggen said Albertans need legal clarity after some parents demanded the right to know what their children are doing at school. "This assertion is inaccurate," stated Calgary lawyer John Carpay, President of the Justice Centre. As explained in great detail in a legal paper released this past April, Alberta law requires that parents be fully informed about all aspects of their children's education, including their children's involvement in extra-curricular activities and clubs.  "The notion that children have privacy rights in relation to their own parents is false," stated Carpay. "In fact, parents have a right to know what their children are doing at school.  To prohibit parents from being informed, absent exceptional circumstances, violates parents' legal rights and responsibilities for their children." "Existing laws already protect students in the rare circumstances where they may face abuse from parents.  What Minister Eggen is proposing to do presumes all Alberta parents are abusive," continued Carpay. The legal paper concludes as follows: Schools have no legal right to withhold information from parents. Instead, teachers and principals have a positive duty to inform parents, including notifying parents of a child's involvement with a GSA or GSA-related activities. The legal obligation to inform parents is modified only in cases where doing so would, objectively, put the child at risk. Such circumstances are exceedingly rare, and Alberta 's current laws provide for them.
The vast majority of parents do not engage in abusive behaviour that would justify the withholding of information regarding the education of their child. Parents have the right to choose the kind of education their child receives, including extracurricular activities, and the right to be informed regarding what their child is learning inside of and outside of the classroom, and what extracurricular activities their child is involved with. The foregoing is made clear by the Alberta Bill of Rights, the Alberta Family Law Act, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the rulings of the Supreme Court of Canada and other Canadian courts. Free Speech Victory: National Center for Public Policy Research Soundly Defeats Fake Transparency Proposal at FedEx Shareholder Meeting

Free Enterprise Project Stymies Teamsters' Effort to Pressure FedEx to Defund Pro-Business, Free Enterprise Group

Memphis, TN/Washington, DC - At today's annual meeting of FedEx Corporation investors, the National Center for Public Policy Research's Free Enterprise Project (FEP) helped defeat a liberal, anti-free speech shareholder resolution put forward by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and Investor Voice as part of leftist efforts to defund free-market organizations. "Today is a good day for free speech and freedom of association," said National Center General Counsel and FEP Director Justin Danhof, Esq., who represented the organization at today's FedEx shareholder meeting.  "Organizations such as the Teamsters and Investor Voice present themselves as innocent advocates seeking greater corporate transparency.  Today, however, we pierced that veil and made sure FedEx investors knew these groups are part of a multi-billion-dollar liberal effort to defund pro-business, conservative organizations.  After we told the investors the truth, they soundly rejected the proposal."

At the meeting, Danhof stated:

Today, the Teamsters and Investor Voice are attempting to conscript FedEx's shareholders into their efforts to defund and silence the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) – groups that seek to improve America 's business environment.

The proponents claim that FedEx's relationships with ALEC and the Chamber of Commerce expose the company to reputational risk.  Considering that the proponents and their allies regularly smear the pro-business positions promoted by ALEC and the Chamber, this is a circular argument with no basis in fact.  The Chamber and ALEC seek to promote a fair economic environment devoid of excessive government regulation and onerous corporate taxation. Such an environment would help, not harm, FedEx.

Danhof concluded:

Proposal seven holds no relevance for the company or its investors.  The proponents are simply trying to use us to censor those that they cannot otherwise censor because our Constitution protects free speech.  Don't let this liberal network silence free speech by dictating FedEx's business relationships. Please vote no on proposal number seven.

A copy of Danhof's full statement at today's meeting, as prepared for delivery, is availablehere.  The audio of Danhof's statement at today's meeting is available here.

Prior to today's meeting, the National Center issued a press release exposing the Teamsters' proposal and calling on FedEx investors to vote it down.

"We may have scored a victory today, but much more needs to be done to protect free enterprise advocates from leftist assaults," noted Danhof.  "Liberal organizations, representing hundreds of billions in assets, annually spend untold sums to try and convince corporate
America to disassociate from pro-business groups. And the left very often succeeds at co-opting corporate America into its fold.  Conservative groups need to realize that an attack on one group, such as ALEC or the Chamber of Commerce, is an attack on all groups that support free-market capitalism."

Launched in 2007, the
National Center for Public Policy Research's Free Enterprise Project focuses on shareholder activism and the confluence of big government and big business.  Since 2014, its representatives have participated in over 100 shareholder meetings to advance free-market ideals in health care, energy, taxes, subsidies, regulations, religious freedom, food policies, media bias, gun rights, workers' rights and other important public policy issues.  FEP's Employee Conscience Protection Project strengthened protections of the political beliefs and activities of over five million workers at 13 major U.S. corporations.  FEP's questioning of Boeing's and General Electric's support for the Clinton Foundation helped trigger an FBI investigation into the Foundation's activities.  Executives put on the spot by FEP at ABC News (Disney), the Washington Post and CNN (Time Warner) meetings acknowledged media bias.

This is the twenty-first shareholder meeting FEP has participated in during the 2017 shareholder season.

FEP activity this year has been covered by media outlets such as the New York Times,Washington Post, USA Today, Variety, the Associated Press, Bloomberg, Drudge Report, Business Insider, National Public Radio and SiriusXM.  FEP's work was also featured inWall Street Journal writer Kimberley Strassel's 2016 book The Intimidation Game: How the Left is Silencing Free Speech (Hachette Book Group).

The
National Center for Public Policy Research, founded in 1982, is a non-partisan, free-market, independent conservative think-tank.  Ninety-four percent of its support comes from individuals, less than four percent from foundations and less than two percent from corporations.  It receives over 350,000 individual contributions a year from over 60,000 active recent contributors.  Sign up for email updates here .  Follow us on Twitter at@NationalCenter for general announcements.  To be alerted to upcoming media appearances by National Center staff, follow our media appearances Twitter account at@NCPPRMedia .

Free Enterprise Project Has Repeatedly Warned CEOs
That Playing Politics is Pricey
Washington
, DC  - The politicization of professional sports, starkly apparent to all after several players took a knee during the playing of the National Anthem last weekend, is an issue the National Center for Public Policy Research has been addressing at the corporate level for years.  Through its Free Enterprise Project (FEP), the National Center has been engaging in shareholder activism to promote objectivity and freedom of expression at companies such as Nike and ESPN (owned by the Walt Disney Company) that have been the enablers of such radicalism.

"Many Americans are shocked and appalled to see so many players - and even entire teams – showing disrespect for our nation by not participating in the National Anthem and presentation of our flag.  Several of these players are undoubtedly encouraged because they have been cheered on by the likes of ESPN and Nike," said National Center Vice President David W. Almasi.  "If this continues, it's at further risk to professional football's fan support and viewership.  As it affects the NFL, it will also impact the companies enabling it. We've confronted Nike, ESPN and others about their radicalism, so they can't say they weren't warned when the backlash hurts their bottom line."

FEP representatives use shareholder meetings to question corporate leaders about their overt support for left-wing causes that can put their companies at both a reputational risk with consumers as well as create workplace environments that can demand groupthink and might endanger the careers of those with differing views.  FEP has participated in 21 different shareholder meetings in 2017 - and over 100 since 2014 - in defense of the free market and the principles of free speech and free expression that guided America's founding.

Just last week, FEP criticized Nike at its shareholder meeting for failing to address whether its conservative and libertarian employees are safe from workplace retribution for personal political beliefs.  FEP cited Nike CEO Mark Parker's staff memo opposing the Trump Administration's January executive order on immigration and travel that referenced "our values" and that "we don't support" the policy as a company.  Nike investor relations staff would not allow FEP's full question to be asked at the September 21 shareholder meeting, and Parker would only say he was "proud" of the company's positions and "we value the opinions of all of our employees."  In light of high-profile dismissals of employees at other companies for their personal political beliefs, Parker did not address if those "valued" opinions would be protected at Nike.

Since the shareholder meeting, and in the wake of the many incidents of kneeling at NFL games, Nike issued a statement saying the company "supports athletes and their right to freedom of expression on issues that are of great importance to our society."  Nike currently makes all NFL uniforms.

FEP also addressed liberal bias at ESPN at the Disney shareholder meeting in March.  CEO Bob Iger, angered at the suggestion of bias at the network, called FEP's assertions "completely exaggerated."  Yet the network later instituted new rules for on-air commentary and social media.  After host Jemele Hill recently called President Donald Trump a white supremacist in a tweet, ESPN President John Skipper sent out a memo to staff to remind them that "ESPN is about sports" and "not a political organization."

This past Monday, ESPN ran nearly constant coverage and commentary about the kneeling at NFL games and President Trump's reaction to it – most of it critical of the President

FEP is the only organization that has taken up the issue of bias directly with the CEOs of Nike and of ESPN's parent company, Disney. Others are content to sit on the sidelines and complain about these issues while we take our concerns right to the top. As a long-term investor, FEP knows that rampant anti-conservative bias is not a winning corporate strategy," said National Center General Counsel and FEP Director Justin Danhof, Esq."Corporations often take liberal positions to try and appeal to millennials and curry favor with the mainstream media. In the same way, many companies take conservatives for granted because right-wing folk tend to avoid protests and boycotts. There is ample evidence, however, that this corporate strategy is no longer working.

"For example, after Target threw its support behind open-bathroom policies that allow grown men to use the same store facilities as young girls, millions of conservative Christians boycotted and the company's stock plummeted," noted Danhof.  "After Starbucks came out against President Trump's initial executive order on immigration and travel, Business Insider reported that the company's brand had 'taken a beating.'  And ESPN is bleeding viewers, with strong evidence suggesting its rampant liberal bias is to blame.  The company's support for its employee who calls the President a 'white supremacist' and its wall-to-wall Trump-bashing will only ensure more people change the channel from the once-great sports network."

Almasi added: "When it comes to sports reporting and athletic apparel, people have lots of choices.  Half of American voters supported President Trump and probably support his policies today.  When they discover that ESPN and Nike are stoking the protests against him, their preferences as a consumer will likely be affected.  Both companies are already posting losses.  They are now doubling-down on stupid."

Black Conservatives Say Players Kneel and Protest at Their Peril

NFL's Indulgence of Radical Politics Sends Divisive Message, Drives Away Fans

Washington, DC -  With the high likelihood of continued instances of professional football players "taking a knee" while the National Anthem is played during this week's NFL games, members of the Project 21 black leadership network are warning that continued protests lacking clear intentions are hurting the sport's reputation as well as the well-being of its sponsors.

While fans who have been polled by the media do not necessarily want players fired over their protests, overwhelming majorities want professional athletes to stand respectfullyduring the playing of the National Anthem. Past protests have been cited as a key factorin fans no longer watching games.

In a commentary published on the Fox News Channel website, Project 21 Co-ChairmanStacy Washington wrote that millionaire athletes protesting without a specific goal are testing the dwindling patience of the American people.

"The NFL has a choice to make, and it's an easy one: political activism or sports. The American people will only tolerate one of those so they had best choose wisely," said Washington, a syndicated talk radio host on the American Family Radio and Urban Family Talk networks and U.S. Air Force veteran who served in an honor guard unit at military funerals. "There are ways to sway a community; defiling a national symbol associated with honor, service, sacrifice and bravery isn't one of them. If the NFL continues to indulge the players, declining ratings and lower attendance at games will become the norm. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the team owners must man up: choose the fans by ending the protests."

Anger over the players' protests has trickled down to other businesses that make money through their affiliation with the NFL. Fans are reportedly buying less team merchandiseand not going to games (and thus not buying concessions). Bars are refusing to broadcastgames. And, in a move that could be costly to the NFL, DirecTV has let some customers cancel their premium "Sunday Ticket" game packages. Sponsor boycotts are also being organized.

"We live in a free country where people have a right to free speech. Having said that, there's a responsibility to use it wisely," said Project 21 member Darryn "Dutch" Martin, a former federal diplomatic official and motivational speaker. "I believe Colin Kaepernick and other NFL players have a right to kneel when the National Anthem is played. But the flip-side to this coin is that fans don't have a duty to spend their hard-earned money on the NFL if they feel our country is being disrespected in any way - even by a peaceful protest such as kneeling during the National Anthem. Furthermore, team owners who are fully aware of the financial ramifications shouldn't be obligated to hire players such as Kaepernick. There's a time and a place for everything. Professional sports should be a politics-free affair."

Project 21 member Nadra Enzi, a community anti-crime activist in New Orleans , is critical of the anti-law enforcement sentiments that many protesting players are embracing: "I can't take a knee to take up a cause that gives perverted honor to mostly career criminals who lost their final fight with the police. Doing do steps on the dignity of urban crime victims and the officers who have been killed in the line of duty in the inner city."

"We need civil discourse," said Project 21 member Jerome Danner, host of the "Thinking It Through" podcast. "It is my utmost desire that our most famous athletes and Commander-in-Chief would set an example by engaging in thoughtful conversation. Rather than impulsively stating our opinions about emotional issues, careful introspection should be taken and considerate perspectives shared. Protests are not necessarily wrong, and neither is having an opinion about them. To move forward as a unified nation, however, we should proceed in a thoughtful and courteous manner uncharacteristic of the times."

Amid our stressful, over-scheduled lives and with the frenzied holiday runaround season nearly here, I'm hoping to interest you in covering what is a debilitating problem for millions: excessive sweating. Throngs of people are sweating bullets in their daily lives, with problem perspiration particularly devastating in social, work and other environments where "keeping your cool" is the name of the game and "image is everything." While many attempt to hide it and suffer in silence, the impacts of dramatic sweating in the presence of strangers, peers, loved ones, and other associates can cause severe embarrassment, stress, anxiety, and other emotional issues--and even undermine one's success. Even when people are alone, excessive sweating takes a heavy toll—adversely impacting self-esteem, productivity and overall state-of-mind in a myriad of ways.

I would love to connect you with a "sweat scholar"--an expert from the International Hyperhidrosis Society (www.SweatHelp.org) who can offer advice on topics like how to know if excessive sweating is situational vs. or more series, how to better control "street sweat," debunking common myths, etc. Some preliminary information follows, also available as a byline article with art. Interest here as I hope?

Signs Excessive Sweating is Serious vs. Situational

Falsehoods and Facts Debunking Myths, Clarifying Confusion Around Problem Perspiration; Surprising Statistics Exemplify the Extent to Which People Struggle with Sweat-Related Issues

As people go about their daily lives at home, work, in social circles and elsewhere, there's a common but hidden scourge: excessive sweating.  In fact, a national survey conducted by the International Hyperhidrosis Society (www.SweatHelp.org) — the scholars of sweat — shows multiple millions suffer from extreme, uncomfortable, embarrassing, debilitating, and emotionally-devastating sweating. This type of sweating is a serious medical condition known as hyperhidrosis and nearly 367 million people of all ages struggle with it on their hands, feet, face, underarms, or body.

Hyperhidrosis can be devastating. While many people attempt to hide their sweating problems and suffer in silence, the impacts are often hard to cover up. Dramatic sweating in the presence of peers at work, or in extracurricular or social environments, can cause severe embarrassment, stress, anxiety, and other emotional issues. Even when people are alone, hyperhidrosis often takes a heavy toll—adversely impacting one's productivity in a myriad of ways, both personally and professionally.

People with hyperhidrosis struggle with disproportionate and random sweating that may drench clothing and footwear, damage technology tools, make exercising and playing sports impossible, promote hiding and isolation behaviors, degrade self-esteem, and even prompt bullying. The holistic effect on life—marital, social and otherwise—is thus profound. In fact, research published in Archives of Dermatological Research indicates that the majority of those with excessive sweating confirm the condition has negative impacts on their social life and well-being as well as their emotional and mental health. Given its extreme impacts, some do seek medical attention. It seems women are more proactive in their attempts to medically rectify the issue amid aScience Daily report that "females are far more likely to discuss their [hyperhidrosis] condition with a health care professional."

Lisa J Pieretti, Executive Director of IHhS, notes, "The pressures of dealing with a 'sweating problem' around peers can be catastrophic to self-esteem and more. Too often, people become anxious about going to work, socializing with friends, or being out in public in general. But when those with hyperhidrosis receive support, understanding, and appropriate treatment, their lives can be dramatically changed."To that point, IHhS co-founder Dr. David Pariser urges that, while hyperhidrosis is the number one dermatological disease in terms of negatively affecting a person's quality-of-life, it's also number one in having the most positive impact when treated. "When hyperhidrosis is caught early, a person's life can be transformed for the better in a multitude of ways," he says.

With that in mind, the first step toward providing solutions for those people who sweat excessively is to bust some common myths and misconceptions with facts from the experts at the IHhS, including these:

Myth: Sweaty people are nervous or have hygiene issues.
Truth: The average person has
2 to 4 million sweat glands. Sweat is essential to human survival and serves as the body's coolant, protecting it from overheating. People with hyperhidrosis (which causes overactive sweat glands) sweat excessively regardless of mood, weather, or activity level—often producing 4 or 5 times more sweat than is considered "normal."

Myth: If you're sweating a lot during exercise, it means you're out of shape.
Truth: If you find yourself sweating a lot during exercise, don't blame it on being out of shape. Research shows that physically fit people actually sweat more and start sweating sooner during exercise that those who are less fit. Why? Because when you achieve greater physical fitness, you can exercise at a higher level, which generates more heat, which causes you to sweat more. Another factor is how acclimated you are to your environment – for instance, if you're used to training in hot weather, your body will sweat more and sooner during exercise because it's become effective at knowing when sweat needs to "kick in" and start cooling you down. If, however, you sweat excessively and uncontrollably (significantly more than what seems "normal" as a reaction to exercise or heat), you may actually have hyperhidrosis.

Myth: You can sweat out toxins... like that happy hour hangover.
Truth: Sweat is basically water, sodium chloride, and potassium—regardless of what you ate or drank yesterday. And sweating does not rid your body of "toxins" — you have your kidneys, liver, lungs, and digestive system for that. Besides, sweat glands reside in your skin and aren't connected to the waste-elimination systems in your body. Want to help your body get rid of "bad" stuff? Eat well, stay hydrated, and exercise to keep your organs functioning properly. Sorry, no shortcuts.

Myth: All sweat is the same and all sweat stinks.
Truth: There are actually two types of sweat glands that each produce their own type of sweat: eccrine and apocrine sweat. Eccrine sweat is an odorless, clear fluid that helps the body to control its temperature by promoting heat loss through evaporation. It's mostly made up of water and salt.   Apocrine sweat, on the other hand, is "stress" sweat and apocrine glands are found mostly in the armpits and genital region (near dense pockets of hair follicles.) Apocrine sweat is a thick fluid that's initially odorless, but doesn't evaporate as quickly as eccrine sweat and can develop an odor when it combines with normal bacteria on the surface of the skin. The odor produced is that characteristic potent smell we often call "body odor." Fortunately for those of us with stressful jobs, there are ways to manage stress sweat (and the resultant odor). Antiperspirants are the first step and fortunately work on both types of sweat. For stress related odor, make sure you're using a deodorant, too.

Myth: Night sweats are a "female" problem.
Truth: Night sweats can be serious and they aren't just something that affects menopausal women. According to Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, President and Founding Member of the International Hyperhidrosis Society as well as Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, night sweats can be significant and shouldn't be disregarded – no matter your age or gender. Drenching night sweats, she says, or any changes in your pattern of sweating should to be evaluated by a physician. Medical conditions with sweating symptoms can include serious infections, cancer, low blood sugar, hormone disorders (not simply the hormonal changes of menopause), and neurologic conditions. Medications may also cause night sweats. It's important to talk to your doctor about night sweating, especially if the night sweats are accompanied by a fever or other symptoms such as unexplained weight loss. Maybe menopause is the culprit, but certainly new night sweating should be discussed with your physician. One thing you don't need to worry about – hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). The medical condition hyperhidrosis causes excessive sweating when awake, not asleep.

Myth: Hyperhidrosis is "just" a summer thing, or it's at least worse during the hot summer months.
Truth: Research from the IHhS also shows that profuse sweating is not simply dictated by the time of year. The majority of patients in one survey indicated that their sweating bothers them equally, no matter the season.

Myth: Excessive sweating is only a sweat problem.
Truth: Excessive sweating can contribute to a number of other problems way beyond the realm of wetness. Emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, embarrassment, and isolation are common. Practical problems with gripping objects and using touch-screen technology are also a frequent issue. But did you ever consider the effects sweating could have on sunburns, wrinkles, and skin cancer risk? If you sweat excessively – you'll need to reapply your sunscreen more often because, you got it, you're sweating it off and not getting its protective benefits for nearly as long.

Myth: People will grow out of hyperhidrosis.
Truth: Contrary to popular belief, research shows that hyperhidrosis does not go away or decrease with age. In fact, in one recent IHhS study, 88% of respondents said their excessive sweating had gotten worse or stayed the same over time. This was consistent across all the different age groups, from youngsters to older adults.

Myth: Sweat is to blame for stains on your clothes.
Truth: Not true; ironically it's actually your antiperspirant combined with your sweat that leads to staining. Apply your antiperspirant at night to help avoid this. As a bonus, your antiperspirant will actually work better, too.

Myth: Antiperspirants are for underarms only and, like caffeine, are best used in the morning.
Truth: Think outside the pits! You can glide, stick, spray, and roll-on nearly anywhere that sweating is a problem (picture hands, feet, face, back, chest, and even groin.)  Be smart and talk to your dermatologist first before applying an antiperspirant to sensitive areas and test new products on small areas of skin first. Luckily there are antiperspirant brands like Certain Dri—one of the most effective that can be purchased without a prescription—that are specifically developed to help those who suffer from excessive sweating. Of special note, use your antiperspirant in the evening as well as in the morning. Sweat production is at its lowest at night, giving the active ingredients in antiperspirants a time overnight to get into your pores and block perspiration when the sun comes up and you really get moving.

Myth: Antiperspirants can cause breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease
Truth: According to the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation, National Cancer Institute, BreastCancer.org, and the Alzheimer's Association, there are no strong scientific studies reporting a statistical association between antiperspirant use and breast cancer risk or Alzheimer's risk. If you're concerned about breast cancer or Alzheimer's, you don't need to ditch your antiperspirants – focus instead on having regular health screenings, avoiding alcohol, exercising regularly, eating a nutritious and balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, staying mentally and socially involved, and protecting yourself from head injuries.

Myth: Excessive sweating is less debilitating than other skin conditions people have to deal with.
Truth: According to Dr. Pariser, hyperhidrosis has the greatest impact of any dermatological disease. In fact, various investigations show the impact of hyperhidrosis on quality-of-life is equal or greater than that of in-patient psoriasis, severe acne, Darier disease, Hailey-Hailey disease, vitiligo, and chronic pruritus.

The extreme level of sweat production experienced with hyperhidrosis can disrupt all aspects of a woman's life, from relationships, recreational activities, and self-image to overall emotional well-being. But it doesn't have to be this way. There are helpful resources available to help people with hyperhidrosis to not just "know sweat," but to also achieve a more comfortable, fruitful and happier life.

With the frenzied, pressure-packed holiday runaround season nearly here, hoping to interest you in covering how to deal with "stress sweat" and/or ways to know if excessive sweating is situational vs. a more series medical condition called hyperhidrosis, which can affect hands, feet, face, underarms, or elsewhere on the body. Millions are sweating bullets in their daily lives, with problem perspiration particularly devastating in social and work environments where "keeping your cool" is the name of the game and "image is everything." But, no matter where we are (at home, work, school, play or elsewhere), stress sweat stinks! Below is a handy list from registered nurse, health educator and "sweat scholar" Angela Ballard. Interest here as I hope?

6 Ways to Control Stress Sweat

Stress is bad enough on its own. Unfortunately for most of us, however, stress usually also brings with it stress sweat, which tends to be particularly stinky, staining, and embarrassing.

Given that there are two to four million sweat glands distributed all over our bodies and that stressful situations are seemingly ubiquitous in modern life, trying to avoid stress sweat might seem like a futile endeavor – but (thankfully) it isn't. There are simple ways you can control stress sweat even when the @#%S is hitting the fan.

But first, what makes stress sweat different from exercise- and heat-induced sweat?

The majority of the sweat glands in our skin are "eccrine" sweat glands. These glands are responsible for most of our heat-related and exercise-related sweating and secrete an odorless, clear fluid (made mostly of water and salt) to help control temperature by promoting heat loss through evaporation. Eccrine glands are found in large numbers on the soles of the feet, the palms, the forehead, cheeks, and in the armpits.

Dreaded "stress" sweat, on the other hand, comes primarily from another type of sweat gland called an "apocrine" gland. Apocrine glands are found mostly in the armpits and genital region (but there are some on the scalp, too) and exist near dense pockets of hair follicles. They produce a thick fluid that they empty into the hair follicle just before it opens onto the skin surface.

While apocrine sweat is initially odorless, it doesn't evaporate as quickly as eccrine sweat and can develop an odor when it combines with bacteria that normally inhabits the surface of our the skin. The odor has that characteristic smell that we often call "body odor." While it may smell, stress/apocrine sweat doesn't actually produce that much wetness–at least not like the amount caused by eccrine sweat.

When the body is reacting to an emotion, like anxiety, stress or excitement, apocrine sweat is released from apocrine glands. Something interesting about stress sweat is that it's immediate, whereas exercise or heat-related sweat can take longer to kick-in.

Scientists aren't sure why apocrine glands produce odor beyond the process described above, but there might be an evolutionary and protective reason behind it. Animals tend to emit an odor when they're stressed, too. That odor acts as a signal to peers that something dangerous or scary is going on and they should react accordingly. If this theory is true, it makes sense that stress sweat would be immediate and not delayed. Note that stressful situations will also increase eccrine sweating, but it's not as immediate or as pungent.

While most of us recognize that stress sweat is a "thing," we usually just suffer through it. This is a shame because there are ways to help control stress sweat and doing so can, in turn, make life a whole lot less stressful:

Big picture: manage your stress and learn how to control it to prevent or limit stress sweating in the first place. Think mindfulness, meditation, and life balance, and when you've figured that out, please let me know.

Use an antiperspirant to prevent sweat-related wetness. Antiperspirants work on both types of sweat glands. Apply at night for best effectiveness. At bedtime you're typically sweating the least, which gives antiperspirants' active ingredients time overnight to form the superficial plugs (that help limit sweating) before you start sweating again in the morning. If you apply antiperspirant when you are already sweating, your sweat will just wash away the product before it can start to work. And, yes, you can use antiperspirants on other body areas besides your underarms. Just test it on a small spot first to make sure it doesn't cause irritation–especially on sensitive parts. As always, talk to your doctor or dermatologist about any concerns.

No luck with the regular stuff? Try a stronger antiperspirant like Certain Dri, which is actually formulated for those suffering from extreme, clinical sweating—a condition called hyperhidrosis.

Also use a deodorant to fight stress sweat odor–or use a combination antiperspirant and deodorant for convenience and cost savings.

Trim and groom your hair where apocrine sweat and odor is a problem. This won't limit the sweating, but it can help your antiperspirant and deodorant reach your skin more thoroughly and, therefore, do their jobs more effectively. Trimming hair also prevents sweat and oil from hanging around and cuts down on the surface areas on which bacteria and sweat can react (remember, it's that reaction that leads to body odor.)

There are other, more sophisticated treatments to stop sweating and the odor linked to it, too. One such innovation is the medical device miraDry, which studies show reduces body odor by destroying sweat glands and hair follicles via microwaves. You need to go to a doctor's office for the miraDry treatment, but the results are permanent and will stop sweating, odor and hair growth in the treated area.

While stress may be unavoidable, we can alter our reactions to it for calmer, sweeter days.

Top 5 Ways Your Smart Home Can Help Take Care of Your Kids

By Rafi Zauer, Head of Marketing at Essence - No matter how well you organize yourself, life happens: it is not possible for any parent to watch their kids 24 hours a day. When they are young, even if you are at home you can't keep your eyes on them all the time, and of course, at some point, when they get older, they will have to stay home alone. But fear not, smart homes are here to help you on the adventure of raising a family. Here are 5 ways a smart home can help you take better care of your kids at all life stages, providing some much needed peace of mind:

1- Baby monitoring
A connected home system equipped with a smart camera can double as a baby monitoring solution. Thanks to motion detection technologies, the camera will start recording the moment the baby begins to stir in the crib, sending real-time video straight to your smartphone. You will also be able to proactively request live images and see what the baby is up to at any time.

2- No more lost keys
In case your children come home from school while you are still at work, you can be reassured, knowing that they won't need to be carrying around the house keys anymore, with the risk of losing them —again — and save you the security risk and the hazard in changing the lock. With the help of a smart lock, all they will need to enter the house is a security code. And even if they forget the code, you will be able to grant them access to the house from your smartphone, unlocking the door for them.

3- Keeping strangers away
As much as we warn our kids to never open the door for strangers, we all know that children can be too innocent and trusting. With a smart home solution you can receive an immediate alert every time the door opens and use your camera to check who came in. In case you see a stranger in the house and feel your children are in danger, you can act immediately by contacting them, coming home or calling the police when necessary.

4- Being in the know
We want our children to feel we trust them and give them a sense of independence as they grow up, but we can't help it- we are just worried about them! With a smart home solution, you can allow your children relative freedom, but still know at all times what is going on at home. For example, you will always know at what time your kids come home from school and make sure that they are safe, even if they forget to give you a call when they arrive, as they were supposed to. Also, you can use your camera to see what your children are doing when they are alone at home- Are they doing their homework?  Are they doing anything dangerous like playing with fire? Are your precious teenagers having a house party while you are on vacation?

With a smart home you will be in the know of what your children are doing at all times and keep everything under control, without nagging them too much.

5 – Protect them from themselves
A person's home is considered the safest place for him to be in, but it can also hold danger for our kids who don't understand the consequences of their actions and tend to stretch the boundaries.  Ever went on a weekend trip and on your return found the liquor cabinet suspiciously short of stock? As parents, sometimes we have to protect our children from themselves. With a smart home solution, you can install magnets and motion detectors on all the doors and drawers from which you want to protect your kids, like a gun room or a medical cabinet. You can create a rule to get a real-time alert when someone opens the door, creating a log in your phone app. If you combine the sensors with a camera, you'll even be able to see who it was.

These are just some ideas of how a smart home solution can help you take care of your kids, but thanks to smart rules you can create many different scenarios to suit your family's needs. For example, you can turn the lights on for your little one if he got up at night to go to the bathroom or for your teenage daughter when she comes home late at night without having to get out of bed, and even turn them off for them if they forgot to do so. Also, by installing a motion detector in the room, you'll be able to know if they are awake in the morning, making sure they are not late for school. As you see, the possibilities are endless!  Rafi Zauer is Head of Marketing at Essence, providers of intelligent end-to-end IoT platforms for service providers offering home security, automation and senior care services. www.essence-grp.com  10.03.17

"The content of the news in the last few months, and indeed years, provides clear and loud evidence for the fact that our education system is failing," notes Miriam Mason-Sesay, who believes "division, hatred and bigoted fearfulness are fostered seemingly unchallenged, and our education system has not prepared our youngsters to evaluate the veracity of so many claims." Craig Kemp in Singapore wants "more emphasis on lifelong learning skills than on curriculum content," and Elisa Guerra Cruz's curriculum would be focused on "passion projects, aimed at gaining knowledge and abilities, but also at discovering whatever fires a student's heart,"

I'm working with actress Gabrielle Union and NBA veteran Dwyane Wade's

I'm working with actress Gabrielle Union and NBA veteran Dwyane Wade's private chef, Richard Ingraham, as he prepares to launch his first cookbook tomorrow, Eating Well to Win. Focused on developing delicious, flavorful recipes — many of which include either a Southern, Creole, Italian or Asian flair — that also help his celebrity clientele reach their peak performance, I thought you might be interested in testing out some of the recipes from his cookbook or connecting with him directly for an interview. Would love to hear your initial thoughts on coordinating this opportunity. Digital copies of the cookbook are also available upon request. You can learn more about Chef Richard at www.chefrli.com. I just wanted to send you a quick email about your webpage

I just wanted to send you a quick email about your webpage, http://www.montrealtribune.com/science.technology.html. I've been referencing your page with my homeschooling group when we need good teen driving resources. So I just wanted to say thanks for all the help from all of us. :-) My daughter, Jess, also found a driving safety webpage that she thought you might find helpful, http://www.shearcomfort.com/teen-safety-drivers-seat.asp . Can you include this on your page? A friend of hers was in a car accident recently (not hurt, thankfully!), so she's very passionate about teaching her peers about staying safe while driving. If you have a minute, let me know what you think. Thanks again! Take care, Katelyn Chaney 10.03.17
