Myrrh Records to release "ONE," the official recording of World Youth Day 2000 Compilation

Myrrh Records to release "ONE," the official recording of World Youth Day 2000 compilation project to include winans phase 2, sixpence none the richer, jaci velasquez, and more with the official theme song of "world youth day 2000," releasing July 18th.

NASHVILLE, TN: One, the official recording of World Youth Day 2000, is set to hit streets on Myrrh Records July 18th, 2000.

World Youth Day 2000, the 15th in a series of events begun by Pope John Paul II in 1985, is expected to draw 1.5 million Christian youth representing almost every nation on earth to Rome, Italy August 15-20 for a season of prayer, praise and fellowship. The weeklong event is part of a worldwide celebration of the 2000th anniversary of the incarnation of Christ.

One will celebrate the World Youth Day 2000 theme of unity through eleven original and favorite Christian songs. A highlight among these is "Emmanuel," the official hymn of World Youth Day 2000, included on the album in both it’s original Italian version and its English international version.

Among the acclaimed producers participating in One are Rodney Jerkins, Rudy Perez, Rick Elias, Monroe Jones, Mark Heimermann, Dan Posthuma, Brent Bourgeois, Steve Taylor, David Rolfe, Loren Dawson, and Jay Healy. The project includes cuts by such respected Christian artists as Sixpence None the Richer, Jaci Velasquez, Winans Phase 2, Salvador, A Ragamuffin Band, Burlap to Cashmere, and newcomer Gabriel’s Harp.

One also includes three exclusive duets on the original songs "Peace Has Broken Out," with Maire Brennan and Irish singer/songwriter Booley; "The Last Supper," with Cindy Morgan and Universal Latin Records recording artist Luis Fonsi; and "There Is Still a Dream," with GRAMMY Award-winner Aaron Neville and Rachael Lampa. Sixpence None the Richer offers an exclusive new mix of its hit song "Love," from the group’s platinum-selling, self-titled release.

The album also includes such popular Christian songs as "Basic Instructions" (Burlap to Cashmere), "It’s Alright (Send Me)" (Winans Phase 2), and "Il Tuo Strumento," the Italian-language version of the song "Make Me an Instrument" (A Ragamuffin Band), among other songs.

One was made possible by an unprecedented agreement between the Italian Committee for World Youth Day 2000 (GMG) and Gaylord Entertainment, with its divisions Word Entertainment and Gaylord Digital. Chuck Nelson, vice president of creative and artist development for Word Entertainment, led the effort to build the new relationship between Word Entertainment and the Church.

"One opens a door for believers to unite together across racial, national and denominational barriers, under one banner of faith," Nelson says. "This album carries the same message of Christ’s love to anyone who picks it up, and should find an audience among all who follow Christ, both Catholics and evangelical Christians."

"We see One as a strategic opportunity to introduce Catholic consumers, most of whom are unaware of what Christian music has to offer them, to the wide range of Christian retail products available," says Jim Chaffee, vice president and general manager of Myrrh Records. "We are very excited about the opportunity to introduce Catholic teens to a whole new genre of music that can bring hope and a positive message to this next generation of believers."

One will be marketed primarily in conjunction with the World Youth Day 2000 event. Marketing efforts for One will focus around street promotions during the conference, and aggressive Internet promotions prior to, during and after the conference headed by Musicforce.com and its parent company, Gaylord Digital. Gaylord Digital will also launch and support the site www.worldyouthday.com, which will offer One for sale through Musicforce.com. National media and marketing campaigns will concentrate on both Christian and Catholic outlets, in the U.S. and internationally. The first radio single from the project, "Heart of Every Man," by Gabriel’s Harp, is currently impacting AC and Inspirational Christian radio.

A Ragamuffin Band and Gabriel’s Harp have been appearing in concert on a promotional tour for One, with select dates in the U.S. and Europe in April and May, as well as performances in Paris, France at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, and in Strasbourg, France in June. A primary purpose at these events is to teach the hymn "Emmanuel" to youth prior to the gathering in Rome.

SIXPENCE & JAYHAWKS MEMBERS HELP OUT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Here's a press release on CDNOW Online that went out last week about Sixpence's involvement with Habitat For Humanity:

Members of the Jayhawks and Sixpence None the Richer ventured into Harlem Monday (Sept. 11) morning to help non-profit group Habitat for Humanity, which builds houses for low-income families, celebrate the completion of its 100,000th house.

The bands, which had also performed at a Habitat benefit concert at the Lincoln Center Sunday (Sept. 10) night, joined a crowd of dignitaries at the construction site that included Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter and a spotlight-hogging Mayor Giuliani.

Members of both bands spent the better part of the morning helping finish construction of the houses. If it was strange to see musicians up so early in the morning, it was even stranger to watch them gamely wrestle with ceiling panels and drywall. "I'm very unhandy," admitted Jayhawks frontman Gary Louris. "My wife is the one who fixes things around the house."

Sixpence's tiny frontwoman, Leigh Nash, seemed oddly at home putting up load-bearing beams. "I know how to do a little bit [of construction work]," she said. "It's very refreshing to come here and do this. I feel like I'm a servant today. I'm here to serve."

Both Nash and Louris said the chance to meet Carter was a main reason they signed on: the ex-President, surrounded by an impenetrable wall of Secret Service agents, was actually working on another building down the street. Even so, said Louris, "This is a beautiful example of people getting involved in other people's worlds. Life is more than just your family, I'm beginning to realize. It's not about building walls around yourself. I can see working with Habitat -- or doing something else like it -- for the rest of my life." -- Allison Stewart, CDNOW Online

Spotlight On...Sixpence None The Richer

Just a year ago members of Sixpence None The Richer were playing at a venue light years away from the arena stages they now prowl. "There were 10 people there," vocalist Leigh Nash, 23, says of the crowd at the Wal-Mart in her native New Braunfels, Texas. "And except for my mom, the rest were shopping." A representative from their label had to bribe the band just to keep them playing. "She begged us, 'If you get through the set, I'll buy you an Icee!'"

Since then the band- Nash plus guitarist Matt Slocum and Sean Kelly, drummer Dale Baker and bassist Justin Cary- has found that success is a whole lot sweeter. "Kiss Me," their debut single, climbed to the top of the charts in more than 10 countries (it reached No. 2 in the U.S.), and their third album, "Sixpence None The Richer," has gone platinum. While the Sixpences (the name comes from a children's story by C.S. Lewis) were flattered when "Kiss Me" was played at the wedding of Great Britain's Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones last June, life isn't regal. "We never have enough socks," says Nash. She should have stocked up at Wal-Mart. ~Anne Lang

The 25-city tour kicks off Wednesday in Philadelphia and wraps Oct. 30 in Miami. Tickets will range from $15-$20, depending on the market.

During the outing, members of Better Than Ezra and Sixpence None The Richer will make weekend appearances at select JC Penney outlets, signing autographs and giving away Arizona merchandise. Star Wear
When on tour, Sixpence None the Richer's singer packs plenty of style

1. CENTS-IBLE SHOPPER: "I wear tank tops a lot with my little Capri pants, I probably got this one at T.J. Maxx; they have the cutest little shirts and great bargains. If it's really cheap, I'll buy something even if I just kind of like it."

2. TEE TIME: "This blue shirt is from one of my favorite bands, Drugstore. 'El President' is their single, and I got it at the concert. I got into them because Thom Torke- the singer from another favorite band, Radiohead- did 'El President' as a duet with Isabel [Monteiro] from Drugstore."

3. SOUTHERN STYLE: "This is from a shop called Smack in Nashville [my hometown]. It's cool: =You get your stuff in dog-food bags. I have to do most of my shopping in Nashville because of [a lack of] time [when on the road]. There's not a whole lot to choose from, but there are some pretty good thrift stores."

4. RED-HOT COAT: "I got this in Los Angeles. I'm not really into big furry things, but the collar is subtle enough that it's attractive. The coat is very comfortable and very warm, and I wear it all the time- in fact, I probably wear it too much!"

5. FASHION VICTIM: "This brown beaded dress is one of my favorites because it's so glamorous and classy. I did a show in Prtland in it once, and it was a good performance. It's definately not comfortable, though; it's os heavy, and you can feel the beads through the material on your body."

6. FAN(TASTIC) FIND: "This coat really means a lot to me. I was wearing it at a show in Indiana, and a fan came up to me and gave me a note. It said that the band had touched them with our smiles, our words, our ripped pockets- my pocket is torn on the coat. I got it at a vintage shop, and I think the pocket was torn when I got it. It's one of my favorite things here. I'm keeping the note in the pocket because it meant a lot."

7. TOPPING IT OFF: "I usually wear dresses for shows, but I endded up wearing this top with embroidery one night. It's from Target. It was one of those situations where I was leaving the hotel and didn't have time to go back before the show. So I put a little black dress in my backpack, but I couldn't wear it because you can see through it. So I wore my black Calvin Klein jeans and this top, and I was very comfortable."

Sixpence None The Richer Pitches In For Habitat For Humanity
(This article was taken from MTV Online.)

Sixpence None
The Richer's
"Kiss Me"

Sixpence None the Richer climbs into the Top 5 on this week's Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart with "Kiss Me," the breakthrough single from the group's 1997 self-titled debut (which was re-released in February 1998).

The chart wealth has apparently gotten the Nashville, Tennessee, trio in a charitable mood, and the band has agreed to roll up its sleeves for Habitat For Humanity's 1999 Easter Morning Blitz Build.

Sixpence and several of the staff members from the band's record label, Squint Entertainment, will head to Americus, Georgia, on March 29 and 30 to join 1,000 other volunteers in helping build an estimated 25 homes for the poor and needy.

"Because we believe our music is a gift," offered Sixpence guitarist Matt Slocum in a statement, "we believe the best response to success is to serve. And I can't think of a better way to serve than to work with Habitat for Humanity."

According to the nonprofit organization, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 70,000 houses for more than 350,000 people worldwide since its creation in 1976.

Pulse! March 24, 1999 Sixpense Single to Air on Dawson's Creek

On Wednesday, March 24, the "Dawson's Creek" episode will feature the Sixpense None the Richer single "Kiss Me" once again. This corrects an inaccurate air date previously reported on this web site. The show airs on the Warner Bros. network at 8pm (EST)/7pm (CST) in most markets--check local listings for more information. Meanwhile, "Kiss Me" has already been included on the "Dawson's Creek" soundtrack scheduled for release in late April. In related news, the motion picture She's All That, which also features "Kiss Me," has grossed over $55 million at the box office and the single continues to climb the sales and airplay charts.

If you haven't heard "Kiss Me," the infectious single from Sixpence None the Richer's self-titled album, you probably aren't a TV-addicted teenager. Featured in "She's All That" (currently in theaters) and the "Dawson's Creek" soundtrack (due in April), the song recently landed at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. To top off its lucky streak, the Nashville-based quintet just scored its first Grammy nomination. There's just one problem.

Sixpence, whose music recalls the trance-pop of the Sundays more than the stuff of Sunday sermons, landed its Grammy nod in the Best Rock Gospel Album category. "We tried to avoid that," sighs 26-year-old guitarist-cellist-songwriter Matt Slocum. "We even registered not to be nominated in that category (because) that's not all that we are. There's more to us" -- namely, a catchy crossover pop sound.

But before anyone demands a recount of the votes, it should be noted that the band does have religious roots. "We were very, very young when we first started, and the first label that came to us was a small Christian independent label out of Nashville, and we thought, 'Why not?'" 22-year-old lead singer Leigh Nash tells EW Online. "We're all Christians, and we didn't really understand the reasons to stay away from (Christian music). It's not because we're ashamed of our religion, but because it can pigeonhole you right away and turn off a huge number of people before they even hear your music."

There's no need to worry about that now, thanks to "Kiss Me"'s airplay ubiquity. And how does the band feel about tonight's Grammys? "We're honored, no matter what," says Leigh. "We don't really expect to win, since most of the other bands (including Petra and Ashley Cleveland) are very well known in the Christian music industry. But that's totally fine."

--HOMETOWN: Nashville

--LATEST ALBUM: Sixpence None the Richer

--REASON YOU'VE NOTICED THEM: Their cheerfully Lilithy single "Kiss Me" is a top five radio smash.

--HOW THEY WOULD DESCRIBE THEIR SOUND IF THEY WERE MUSIC CRITICS: "Oh, gosh," says 22-year-old singer Leigh Nash. "It's like, uh...okay. Pop-alternative with a female vocalist." Jeez, that's not very..."Um, let's see. Shoot. Yeah, I don't...hmm. Okay. There's a lot of really flowery guitars and strings on the album. Spiritual folk-pop?"

--HOW WE DESCRIBE THEIR SOUND: Pop-alternative with a female vocalist.

--TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC: People who think mean people suck.

--FASHION SENSE: Clean

--TRIUMPHANT TALE OF HOW THEY BEAT THE ODDS: Formed in New Braunfels, Tex., eight years ago by Nash and guitarist Matt Slocum, the band--which now also includes guitarist Sean Kelly, bass player Justin Cary, and drummer Dale Baker--spent several years building a following in the Christian-rock community. They released their third album in '97 and have been hawking "Kiss Me" ever since. The song has steadily grown, finally hitting big after it appeared in the teen movie She's All That.

--IF THIS BAND WERE BREAKFAST CEREAL IT WOULD BE: Cheerios

--ALBUMS THAT NEVER LEAVE THE TAPE PLAYER ON THE TOUR BUS: Rufus Wainwright's self-titled debut; Sheryl Crow's The Globe Sessions; anything by Bjork.

KISS ME

Review by Tom Lanham SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER "Kiss Me" (Squint/Columbia) There are more ugly ducklings hidden in the teen flick She's All That than doe-eyed Rachael Leigh Cook. Namely, SNR's lovely, Sandy Denny-toned Leigh Nash, who darts through the warm minstrely guitar spires of the soundtrack's "Kiss Me" like a barn swallow in locust season: English folk with a Texas twist. Even the dumbest high school jock can hear it--the kid's a swan just waiting to happen. A- --Tom Lanham
