The Review
Equinox came across as a fair episode. It was something to add a little spice to Voyager's everyday life in the Delta Quadrant. Before now we haven't seen much of a Federation presence here. We've had Seven discover her parent's ship, and we ran into Species 8472 once when they were training for an ambush on the Federation, but that's mostly it, so this was relatively new. The idea for the moral debate between Janeway and Ransom was a good one too, but it's also been a little overused on Voyager. It seems like every other episode is full of Janeway criticizing someone's protocol or interfereing with natural developement. Ever heard of the prime directive? This is a Starfleet Captain, but that's just an excuse for the writers to mask over this new situation. What's irritating about this, though, is that Janeway is obviously mad about about Ransom's actions, of course who wouldn't be, but she never just outright says it. We hear her get mad, poor Chakotay, but we never know exactly what she is feeling. And we can all relate to how unpredictable Janeway can be at times.

But what exactly did Janeway do that gave us any idea on how she felt?

I have to say that I certainly got several mixed messages. If Janeway is supposed to be the good guy, how come she came across as less compassionate than Ransom, the bad guy? It was done neatly, she nearly left Lessing while Ransom seemed genuinely sorry over what he was doing to Seven, but what was the point? It made Janeway and Ransom both gray colored, and left me in the dark.

I can see how possibly this episode could have been done, and it would have worked. Part I was beautifully done, in my opinion. It had suspense, action and drama. We knew a lot about Ransom, his devotion to just simply get his crew home. He was not a bad person, just maybe a little crazy from his time stuck in the DQ. But, over the summer, the suspense was lost somehow. Part II seemed to sort of cruise off from where Part I had gone. Kind of like hang-gliding from a high spot. The conflict of morals was intended to try and liven up the episode. It nearly did, this could have left us all saying "Wow" at the end when the credits rolled by without necessarily needing to have a huge battle scene or give Seven of Nine implants. We have to recognize the writers, Voyager has done that before, but it didn't do that here.

You can withhold your comments for a few more moments. This is just me talking, I'm always negative. In actuality, I liked the episode. The Doctor situation was a little chilling. They could make him so evil by just the pressing of a few buttons. I was actually a little relieved when his subroutines came back online.

What would I do to change this episode? Janeway's emotions need to be more real, not Mulgrew's acting, that was well-done, but her emotions. She needed to be more of the one thing she continued to stress throughout the episode, more human. Neelix could have been on longer than the 15 seconds of fame he had. Neelix has always added a carefree, relaxing attitude to Voyager. If it had been properly timed, his presence could have given us all a little break from all the misery.
