Shadow/Clyde Arrowny

Shadow's Past

Clyde Arrowny was talked into joining his ambitious friend, Baram, in hopes of becoming the greatest train robbers in history. Although reluctant, Clyde quickly grew fond of his new occupation because of the thrill and danger of the heist. Baram's ambition became a reality as the two made a one million gold piece robbery successfully. Baram decided it best that they take up aliases after making such a large robbery and chose the name "Shadow" for himself.

Unfortunately, soon after, during an escape from pursuers, Baram was mortally wounded. The bleeding Baram was found by a disillusioned Clyde, who, without Baram's leadership, grew scared and confused. Baram pleaded with Clyde to kill him before their pursuers found him and tortured him. Clyde couldn't grant such a request upon his friend and ran madly through the woods with Baram's screams echoing behind him in his ears.

Clyde, now also wounded and exhausted, stumbled upon a secluded village called Thamasa. A young female villager, accompanied by her dog, found him and took care of him and later became his wife. Sometime later, Clyde's wife passed away, leaving him with a toddler daughter, Relm. Grieved, disillusioned, frustrated, and filled with a kindling of determination, Clyde chose to leave his life behind and go out to make the world a better place for his daughter. Clyde left Relm with her grandfather, Strago, and told his wife's dog to stay with the girl. The dog, loyal to Clyde now, followed him anyway.

Clyde trained himself to be an assassin and adopted Baram's alias, "Shadow". Aided by his now attack dog, Interceptor, Shadow wandered the globe. As time went on though, Shadow became even more disillusioned and burnt out with the way of the world. Harboring away his emotions and ethics behind his dark shroud, Shadow became a man of infamous reputation for doing any job, no matter how dirty, for the right price.

Final Fantasy VI

The World of Balance

Shadow continues to wander and offer his services, whether ro a fee or or for free on a whim. He often runs into members of a rebel faction against the Empire, called the Returners, and aids them in various ways but always leaves whenever he feels his services are done. Later on, Shadow sells his services to the Empire, which brings him to two key points : his return to Thamasa and reuniting with gis daughter, Relm, and father-in-law, Strago, and his first show of concern for a person- the young Returner named Terra.

Shadow keeps his guise within Thamasa and with his family and later leaves once his task is over, as well as leaving Interceptor with Relm as originally intended. As time passes and the Empire's deeds become more tyrannical, the Returners, who now include Relm and Strago, attempt to stop those in power from awakening ancient magic that could destroy the world. Shadow is found, once again disullusioned and betrayed by his employers but refuses to fight against those whom he still has a contract with.

The emperor and his assistant, Kefka begin to break the balance in the magic shrines and all seems lost until an embittered Shadow arrives to rescue his Returner friends and take on Kefka single handedly. The world begins to break apart and Shadow orders the Returners to flee while he stops Kekfa. With seconds to spare, Shadow rendezvous with his friends and escapes on their airship, but the catyclysm has already begun. The airship breaks apart and all the Returners are scattered around the globe.

The World of Ruin

The world is a wasteland and filled with deadly creatures and demons of old fables are now a reality. Shadow makes a venture into a dangerous cave that has risen from the depths of the ocean in seach of a powerful weapon called the Striker but is overwhelmed and wounded. The Returners, slowly reunited, find Shadow in the cave and take him back to Thamasa to rest. When they go back to check on him, Shadow is nowhere to be found but reportedly went to the colliseum. The Returners bet the Striker the found in the cave where they found Shadow and take him on in a duel. The exhausted Shadow can't keep up and, after talking with his friends, decides to use his skills for their cause. Now Shadow has a new family and can fight alongside his daughter.

SHadow and the Returners face Kefka in a final battle, and renewed with a sense of purpose and belonging, Shadow helps defeat Kefka. Kefka's world begins to crumble without his power and the Returners make their escape.....but no one knows what happened to Shadow. Shadow finds a small cleft of rock as the world falls apart and tells Interceptor to stay with Relm one last time. Alone once again, Shadow tells the spirit of his departed friend that he's through running and will start again from the beginning. Shadow disappears....
