Microzymas of the air
Poetic harbingers of meaning
Mistresses of the daughter cell
Disappearing into lucent fibers the moment the birth is done
Reassembling from who knows where when mitosis (pregnancy) comes again
Immortal, outside the body, inside the body--who knows how they migrate?

Meticulously shown to live and die
Who tells them where to come and to go
When even the Mighty Genome would have to fly
If the nature of these little birds was known?
How many of them to form a gene?
(Or is it that they flew to someone else's?)
Is the body a palace or is it a corral
Whose loyalty can last only until evening?
And where then are they,
The microzymas that roll upon the wave
That scroll through the skies
That snuggle in the fibers of the ancient chalk cliffs
(And wouldn't the dinosaurs have been a pushover?)
That would dance on the dusty screen in the back of the doctor's office
If it ever was turned on?
...where are they now?
