HITCHMAN FAMILY PICTURES

Some time after the death of Walter Hitchman's wife, Matilda, he remarried. Upon the occassion of that marriage a family picture was taken. On this page I have cut shorts from that photo to share with you

This is Grandpa Walter himself. (Handsome guy isn't he?)

Walter's oldest boy Albert (my cousin Shana's GGrandfather)

Next in line--Ernest. He was drowned in the Columbia river in a logging accident before the time of this picture. We have a picture of him as a baby but none later.

We have no pictures of Mabel. She had died long before this picture was taken. If anyone knows her date or place of death,we would appreciate hearing from you.

"Uncle Frank" was a favorite of mine. He had lost a leg and it was a thrill for me, as a little girl to watch him 'take off his leg'.

Uncle 'Art' owned a real estate company in Portland, Oregon. He lived in a huge antebellum style house located on the scenic drive headed from Multnomah Falls to Portland. The house still stands.

This is Elmer, my Grandpa! I lived with him for several years as a child. After I had my first child, one of my favorite memories of him is playing hide and seek with my 16 month old daughter. A favorite story he would tell is when he was 16 years old and working in a lumber camp. On Saturday nights the rest of the gang would go into town to party but of course Elmer was too young so he would stay in camp. They lived in a quonset type building and his bed was in the far corner in the back. One night he woke up and in the darkness he could see a bear beside his bed. What to do??? He knew that bears were afraid of fire and remembered that in the pocket of his 'long johns', which he wore to bed, was a book of matches. He moved ever so slowly to get his hand to his pocket, got the book of matches and immediately struck one and jabbed it into the bear's face. Oh My, it was only his coat hanging over a chair.

Elmer's wife Inez (Mortenson). My dear sweet Grandma. (Had to be to put up with Elmer's sense of humor)

The baby of the family, Earl. Uncle Earl bought out Elmer's half of the 'gypo' logging operation that the two boys owned in Silverton, Oregon. Elmer went to Roseburg and became a 'land baron'. Earl set up Salem Equipment Inc. on 'D' Street in Salem, Oregon. A more honest, fair man you will search long and hard to find.

3 of Elmer and Inez's children:

Birdie

Geraldine

Kenneth
