In the Netherlands there is a debate as to who was the "first" Lord of Arkel. What is not in dispute is the story that a man by the name of Heiman was in fact an historical character who resided in Arkel in the tenth century:

The name Heiman traces back to a story of a brave man, who in the tenth century served Emperor Otto the Great of Hungary. Because of his stouthearted actions he made himself liked to such extent that the emperor sent him to East-Friesland to serve Tieleman, who was the landlord of that region, as a governor of Neder-Frieland, presently province of the Netherlands. He married the daughter of Tieleman, named Silla or Gella, and departed to Holland. There he became a favorite of the counts of Holland and Teisterband, who gave him some lands situated at the Linge which later were unified under the name of "Land of Arkel". Arkel, earlier called Arclo, is very old. In 641 already a church was founded and it is said that Heiman settled himself in the tenth century and that his son Foppo built a castle. It is therefor said, but historically disputed, that this Heiman was the "first lord of Arkel". (Dutch readers may want to visit the site of John Oom for the more complete story about the debate as to who was the "first" Lord of Arkel, excerpt translated by Engel Roza.

Heijman means "hero on his own inheritance" or perhaps better said "hero on his (own) inherited territory". The name can be found in the area around Dordrecht from as early as 1284 and might actually have been a form of Hendrick from Heynderic. This from the Meertens Institute in The Netherlands. The home page gives an entry on "Nederlandse Familienamen Databank". If you search on "Roza", you will find that 553 persons carried the name in 1947 when a "population count" was made in the Netherlands. The count also gives a distribution over the various provinces.

Heijman Gijsbert is first found in Andel in the year 1608 when he leases a "tiend" in NeerAndel, blocknumber 3 (Oud Munster 755-1). It seems likely that he moved here about the time of his marriage to Eijke. He is further found in the tax rolls at Andel in 1608 and 1614. (Alphen, van, Evert, "Het Geslacht Rosa" [The Family Rosa], Gens Nostra, January, 1965, p. 22-25.) Heijman Ghijsberts in 1623 is "collecteur der verpondingen" (collector of taxes) in Andel. (Oud Munster, 763).

One MARIKEN AERT WILLEMSDR, widow of JAN ANTHONISZ KUIJST, died before 1628, probably in Andel, North Brabant.

Her last will and testament was dated January 29, 1623, in which she made the following provisions:

- she must be buried in the church of NeerAndel

- she forbids her heirs or children to sell any of the inherited goods.

- her heirs are only allowed to use it and keep the profit. If one of her heirs dies without children, their part that was inherited by him/her must be given back to the other heirs.

- the heirs are: -Heijman Ghijsberts, husband of IJken Jan Kuijsten and Leendert Dircxsz, husband of Teuntgen Jan Kuijsten, sons-in-law, and daughters of Mariken.

- the [before named] sons-in-law are also guardians over Jan and Margrietgen, orphan children of the deceased Aert Jansz Kuijst, late son of Mariken, and Jenneken Anthonis Matheusdr and over Lijntje, daughter of the deceased Lijntgen Jan Kuijsten, late daughter of Marike and Anthonis Cornelisz.

- finally 150 guilders have to be given away; 50 to the church of NeerAndel, plus 50 to the poor of Andel, and 50 to Henrixken Herman Huijberts. (Woudrichen R467; transcribed and translated by Jos de Kloe.)

Mr. De Kloe goes on to explain why he is convinced that the Heijman Ghijsberts, mentioned above is in fact Heijman Ghijsberts [Rosa], as Heijman Ghijsberts is never found using the surname Rosa/Roza:

There are some clear examples of properties that are inherited from the Kuijst family into the Rosa family of Andel. An example is lot nr. 276 on the map of 1601 (see GTMWB 1985). In 1601 it is owned by Jan Anthonisz Kuijst, in 1668 it is owned by Jan Heijmans (Rosa). No transactions are known in between those years.

Eijke was a woman of Andel and rather well-to-do, her parents are known to have own much real estate.

In addition some ancestry of the KUIJST family is known:

Jan Anthonisz Kuijst, lives in 1567, 1576, 1600, 1601, died ca. 1602; he was a son of Theunis Jansz Kuijsten, mentioned in 1545, 1570, 1571. His father was probably Jan Kuijsten, mentioned in 1532, 1533 in Andel.

Mariken was the daughter of Aernout Willemsz, mentioned in 1545, 1560, 1570, 1571; died circa 1576.

Mr. De Kloe wrote an article regarding his finds which was published in GTMWB (Genealogisch Tijdschrift voor Midden en West Brabant), 1997, p. 282.

On March 4, 1626 HEIJMAN GIJSBERTSEN was charged 25 guilders payable to the two minor children of WALRAVEN VAN HEIJDENWIJCK (probably as lord) for two certain properties. (Judicial Archives of Tuil. Translated by Marco Schelling.)

On July 20, 1630 ABRAHAM and HEYMEN GIJSBERT, the latter also on behalf of the children of his late brother ALERT GIJSBERTSEN, together as heirs of their father and grandfather, GIJSBERT GOIRTSEN, sell to HENDERICK DIRCKSEN FEYTER the title-deed of a piece of yard and orchard in Herwijnen, called Beyerslant, that was transferred by the Lord of Oijen to GIJSBERT GOIRTSEN on July 11, 1610. (Judicial Archives of Tuil, no. 1246, fol. 330vso. Transcribed and translated by Peter Nouwt.)

Heijmen transferred 5 1/2 hont land, situated in the "Geertgeshoeff" to ABRAHAM GIJSBERTS [his brother] in 1636. (Judicial Archives of Tuil).

Heijman is still alive on 24 May 1637 (source: Woudrichem R53). He dies before 1651, when his heirs are mentioned in a adjency in OpAndel (Oud Munster 754-1).

The preceding sources from Oud Munster and Woudrichem (unless otherwise noted) were transcribed and translated by: Jos de Kloe.
