With the 4th ‘Bishi Bashi’ indie comic book/small press event at the Black Swan comes the chance to check out some of the most inspiring, graphically creative comic books and artists that the country and moreover the North has to offer. The brainchild of local people Andy Smith and Leonie O’Moore, it showcases the darker side of independent press, allowing the hard work and tenacity of artists to reap some reward. This event will bring together luminaries of the genre including Malcy Duff (Hoofprints), Toby Tripp (Welcome to Slightly Grubby Heaven) and their own creations. Under the ‘There Goes Tokyo’ banner Andy and Leonie have allowed the talents of local creator Cliff Sainsbury to reach a wider audience. If you are not familiar with Cliff’s work, he is responsible for one of the most readable yet darkly innovative creations ‘Freak Daddy’. The event will include a talk on ‘Buffy…’ by Steve Donald and also DJs spinning soulful ‘mood music’ throughout the event. It provides newcomers, enthusiasts and creators the platform required to mix and share viewpoints. I have been informed that a strange and bizarre (quote, unquote) B-movie will be screened but I’m sworn to secrecy on the details! As would be appropriate on such occasions, a full bar and late licence is in operation, with 1am the closing time. Check out this highly original event and see for yourself the work available by the creators of high quality, high- octane small press.
The Bishi Bashi event is held on Wednesday 10th April @ Black Swan, Newcastle Arts Centre, Westgate Road, from 7pm. For further details call 0191 2765579 or visit www.tgtokyo.com.
