To secure the Philippines, the US recruited
Emilio Aguinaldo, who was already fighting
against the Spanish, to help win a land war
As a result of the war, the US gained
formerly Spanish territory including Puerto
Rico, Guam, and the Philippines

Cuba but the Teller Amendment provided
that the US would not permanently occupy
