Bettersworth on the Pascagoula The 1974 session was a busy one for the Mississippi Legislature. Although our State survived from 1894 until 1938 with only an official Coat of Arms and flag, the 1974 session of the legislature selected five of our State's twenty symbols. Chosen were the State land mammal (the white-tailed deer), waterfowl (the wood duck), fish (the largemouth bass), shell (the oyster shell), and water mammal (the bottlenosed dolphin). Whew!
