Serena's POV
(The Arcade)

"No more school, no more school!" I chanted as I ran to the arcade. School was out for a week and I was a happy camper. "Hey, Serena!" Andrew said as I entered the arcade. I returned his greeting with a smile and ran to sit at my usual booth. "So how's it going, Sere?" he asked.
"My grades are getting better. I got a 98% on my math test yesterday. School's okay now but I'm glad it's out for a week. I need rest. Last week was crammed with chemistry tests, physics, and all that other junk. Whew, I'm beat." I sighed and rested my head on the counter. I looked at my watch.
"Oh my gosh! I'm late!" I cried. I grabbed my book bag and raced out the door. I completely forgot about the scout meeting we were supposed to have today. Raye was going to have my butt! Suddenly, I tripped over a part of the sidewalk that was raised. I knew that I was going to fall and prepared for the bad landing. Then, just as I was about to reach the ground, a strong arm wrapped around my waist and another strong arm held my left arm. Those muscular arms pulled me up and suddenly, I was leaning against the chest of someone. I whirled around, ready to thank the person, when a voice I loathed said, "So Meatball Head, still tripping over your own two feet?"
Darien. I was getting ready to throw an insult at him when, to my surprise, my eyes started to fill with tears. For once, I didn't wail. I whimpered softly, while tears fell down. "Why do you have to be so mean, Darien? What did I ever do to you?" I asked while looking at my feet.
"Oh come on, Serena. Don't cry. Look, I'm sorry, okay? I really am. Just stop crying, please. I hate to see you sad." Darien replied with a soft and caring tone. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tissue. He dabbed my face with it as I looked up at him. "Thanks." I whispered. I was amazed. I never knew how nice he could be. Then I remembered Raye and the scout meeting. "Aiiiyyyyyyeee!!! I'm late!" I cried and ran off to the temple.
**************************************************************************************
(Cherry Hill Temple)

"YOU'RE LATE AGAIN, MEATBALL BRAINS! CAN'T YOU BE ON TIME JUST ONCE??!!" yelled Raye.
"Raye, for the last time, I'm sorry! I really am! I got caught up in something." I replied.
"Oh yeah? What did you get "caught up" in? The new Sailor V video game? Flirting with Andrew? Reading comic books? STUFFING YOUR FACE WITH JUNK FOOD????" screamed Pyro.
"NO!! I already beat all the levels in the Sailor V game, I am friends with Rita and I do not flirt with my friends' boyfriends, I'm in college for crying out loud AND I WAS NOT EATING!!!!!!!!!!" I answered back.
"THEN WHAT WERE YOU DOING?!" asked all the scouts in unison.
"What I do with my life is my personal business, thank you very much!!!" I said, with tears streaming down my face.
"You know, I'm really beginning to think that we need a new leader." Retorted Raye.
"Yeah, you know, Raye is right. We do need a new leader." Agreed Amy. I gasped. Amy, my good friend?! How could she do this to me?
"I totally agree with Raye and Amy. We need a dependable leader." Spoke up Lita.
"It would be nice to have a leader who is on time once in her life." Mina said.
I couldn't believe it. How could they do this to me? I thought they were my friends!
"Fine, if you don't want me as a leader, then you won't have me as a leader. From now on, I'm going solo!" And with that, I ran out of the temple. I ran and ran and ran across the street. What I didn't know was that a huge truck was heading straight toward me………………………………...

"Fine, if you don't want me as a leader, then you won't have me as a leader! From now on, I'm going solo!" And with that, I ran out of the temple. I ran and ran and ran across the street. What I didn't know was that a huge truck was heading straight toward me…………….
*And now, on with the story!* **************************************************************************************

*Serena's POV*
I didn't see the truck. I couldn't see anything with tears falling from my eyes. The last thing I remember was someone saying, "Serena! Watch out!" And then, everything went blank.
I woke up a few seconds later. I was dizzy and I was having a terrible headache. But I didn't feel any other pains. I sat up and while rubbing my head, I looked around. Lying next to me on the ground was………..Darien. He was unconscious and around him was a pool of red blood. I gasped and realized what had happened. The person saying, "Serena! Watch out!" was Darien. He must have pushed me out of the way and got hit himself. I crawled over to him and took his wrist to see if he was still breathing. He was, but barely. Then I heard sirens and I felt extremely dizzy. I blacked out again……….

**************************************************************************************

*Serena's POV* (Tokyo General Hospital)
Ugh. I feel so tired. Where am I? I look around. This place looks like…..a hospital room. The last thing I remember was blacking out after hearing sirens. Darien! Oh my god. Where is he? I stand up and immediately the dizziness comes back to me. Err…I sit down on the bed again. Then, a woman is a big, white coat comes in carrying a clipboard.
"Who are you?" I ask suspiciously. I tried to get up.
"Relax, Ms. Tsukino. My name is Dr. Samato. I'm your doctor." She answered.
"Oh. Where's Darien? Is he alright?"
"You must mean the young man who was hit by a truck." She said.
"Yes, that's him. Where is he? Where's Darien?" I ask earnestly.
"Ms. Tsukino--"
"Call me Serena. I hate formalities."
"Yes, Serena. You see, Mr. Chiba has been badly injured. His inner intestines are badly damaged and you see…he might not make it."
"NO! Where is he? I have to see him! PLEASE!" I beg.
"Serena, you are in no condition to see anyone. Besides, Mr. Chiba is resting. The doctors have just performed surgery on him and he must get his sleep."
"No, Dr. Samato. I have to see him! He saved my life and he might be about to lose his own! Please let me see him!" I implored.
"Well, I guess a few minutes won't hurt. But I'm only giving you ten minutes and that's it. Agreed?" she asked.
"Agreed." I answered. I put on my clothes and she led me down a hallway. She stopped at a room and opened the door for me.
"Don't worry. I'll respect your privacy," she whispered before I went in. There he was. But…he didn't look the same. There were tubes attached to him and there were bandages wrapped around his body. I slid into the chair beside his bed.
"Darien…" I whispered. His bangs were in his eyes so I brushed them aside. He looked so peaceful. Only yesterday, he was mean and obnoxious. But now, something happened to him. I just don't know what. Hmm. He's a changed person. I kept a close eye on him. Suddenly, his hand moved. I gasped and took his hand into mine.
Then his eyes were open. They weren't all the way open, but they were still open. I looked into them and saw that they were the most beautiful I had ever seen.
"Meatball head?" he whispered weakly.
"Yeah, it's me. It's Serena, Darien." He tried to smile, but only managed a small grin.
"Are you all right?" he asked.
"I'm fine…thanks to you. You saved me, Darien. Do you know that?" Tears started to fall from my eyes, one by one. His hand was then free from my grasp and he reached up towards my face and brushed the tears away. I put my hand over his. His hand was soft and smooth. I didn't ever want this to end, but I looked at the clock and saw that my ten minutes were up. I took his hand and put it beside him.
"I have to go, Darien. You have to have another operation." I said. He nodded. Then I said, "Please don't die. Promise me that, okay?"
He nodded and then said, "I promise, Meatball Head." I smiled. I stood up to leave. Then I stopped. I bent over him and his kissed him on the cheek. "I'll come back later, after the surgery, okay?" He didn't do anything except smile. I left.

Chapter 3

Hello!!!! Here is chapter three!
Note: Remember that Serena and the scouts are 22 and Darien and Andrew are 25!
And now, what you've all been waiting for…………..
**************************************************************************************

*Serena's POV*

I couldn't believe it. Darien looked so hurt, and I mean he was hurt physically. He saved my life! God, why did this have to happen? Why wasn't I hit? I was the one who was running across the street. I look at the clock that's hanging in my hospital room. It's 8:30 p.m. Dr. Samato had already called my parents. I was supposed to stay overnight at the hospital. ::Sigh:: Thirty more minutes until I can go visit Darien again. ::Yawn:: But I'm so tired. I'll take a quick nap. ::Yawn:: Yep, a nap will do. ZZZZ…..
**************************************************************************************

(The next morning) *Serena's POV*

::YAWN:: Boy, I had a great dream last night. I was running across the street and I wasn't in any danger. I wasn't hurt and Darien wasn't hurt. Wait a minute…DARIEN! Oh gosh! What time is it? 9:15 a.m.!!! Oh my god! I quickly sit up and put on my clothes. I get off the bed and walk towards the door. But someone is turning the knob!
"Good morning, Serena. Did you have a good night's sleep?" asked Dr. Samato. She was smiling.
"Doctor! Is Darien okay? How did the operation go? Tell me everything!" I say.
"Calm down, Serena. Darien lived through the operation, thank goodness. You can go see him after you eat your breakfast," she answered. That was when I saw the tray she had in her hands.
"I can't eat, doctor! I'm not hungry. I have to see Darien!" Just then, my stomach growled. Dr. Samato and I looked at each other and laughed. "Well, maybe I'm a little hungry."
"I thought so," she laughed. I climbed back into my bed and she put the tray in my lap. I looked over the food and realized that I really was hungry. There were scrambled eggs, French toast, hash browns and orange juice. I scarfed up all the food and wiped my mouth with a napkin.
"I'm done eating. Can I go now, doctor?" I asked.
"Yes, you may go. But I'll have to come with you, though. Let me just drop the tray off in the kitchen and we'll be on our way." I get off the bed and follow her out.
**************************************************************************************

(East Wing of Tokyo General Hospital)
It seemed forever, walking through the hospital. The doctors moved Darien to another room, which was on the other side of Tokyo General. I followed Dr. Samato as we walked past walls of white and other rooms. Finally, she stopped at a room marked, E3. It was Darien's room.
"I have to go back to work. Will you be fine here?" the doctor asked me. I nodded yes. "Remember Serena, he just came out of an operation a few hours ago. He is very weak. Don't make him any weaker. Just try to cheer him up," she included. I nodded again and she walked back to the west wing. I entered the room. He lying on a bed again, but there weren't as many tubes stuck to him as there were before. I tiptoed to the chair beside his bed and sat in it. I didn't do anything then. I just kind of stared at him. He didn't look right. He didn't look like himself. He looked kind of ghastly. I shivered, thinking of the possible things that could have happened during the surgery that made him look what he was now. Across the room was a table with today's newspaper and a bunch of magazines. I scooted over to the table, picked up the newspaper, and went back to my chair. I looked at the front page. The first headline said:
"25-year Old Man Hit By A Truck While Saving A Woman." Then and there, I wanted to rip up the newspaper into a billion pieces. But I didn't. I turned to the page where the rest of the story was. I read:

Yesterday, a 25-year old man was hit by a truck. He was trying to push a woman out of the way of the truck but was hit himself in the doing. The woman, Serena Tsukino, hit her head against the pavement of the sidewalk and both were taken to Tokyo General Hospital. Doctors took action when Darien Chiba was first brought to the emergency room. A few hours later, Chiba went into surgery and Tsukino woke up. The woman is said to be fine, thanks to the fine care of Dr. Canting Samato. But the doctors are not sure about Chiba. His surgeon, Dr. Heidi Awai, hopes that he will make it. Samato says that there is a good chance that Chiba will live. Chiba received severe damage to his inner intestines. Police are still looking for the hit-and-run truck driver. Serena Tsukino is a senior in Tokyo University, located in the Juuban area. Police interviewed Tsukino's main professor, Rebecca Wu. "Serena is a good student. She is such a sweet person. She gets good grades and she is living up to her dream, to become a pediatrician. I don't know why she was on the street while a truck was coming straight toward her," the professor said. Old university records show that Chiba also went to Tokyo University when he was in college. Surprisingly, he had Ms. JiYoung as his college professor also. Wu said, "Darien was a good student too. In fact, he was one of my best students. His utmost goal was to become a surgeon. It was very brave of him to push Miss Tsukino out of the way of the truck." Police also interviewed Andrew Johnson, Darien Chiba's best friend. "He never really liked Serena. Every time he saw her, he would tease her. His favorite insult for her was Meatball Head. I don't understand why he would risk his own life, while trying to save Serena. She and him had always been enemies, from the day they met," Johnson reported.

I stopped reading. Why? It's because Darien's hand moved…………………….. **************************************************************************************

Chapter 4

Hello!!!! Here is chapter four of Learning To Love Someone You Hate!
Note: Remember that Serena and the scouts are 22 and Darien and Andrew are 25!

And now, what you've all been waiting for…………..

Now on with the story!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Serena's POV* I put the newspaper down and stared at Darien. He was moaning, like he was in pain. He seemed hurt so I decided to call the nurse. But I didn't get to do that for Darien woke up before I had the chance to. He just seemed to look up at the ceiling. He kept staring up when I whispered his name. "D-Darien?" He turned his head to me but didn't say anything. His eyes were emotionless and he looked as if he was in some sort of trance. I whispered his name again, but this time louder. He still didn't say anything. He kept staring at me. It was scary. Then, I felt very afraid. He didn't do anything and he didn't blink at all. I remembered a movie where a girl was in a hospital and her eyes were open and she didn't do anything. She was like that for several hours when the doctors realized she was already dead. Then, I knew that that must be why Darien was doing this. But I didn't believe myself. I reached over to him and shook him by his shoulders. As I did that, tears streamed down my face and I cried him name. He still didn't stir. I shook him harder, with all the force I had and yelled his name. It was no use. He stayed in his hypnotic state. I cried. **************************************************************************************
*Author's POV*
Serena cried her heart out. But then, one of her teardrops landed on Darien's cheek and rolled down to his chin. Another tear did the same thing. Serena buried her face in Darien's neck and continued to cry. Suddenly, she felt a hand in her hair, stroking it softly. She was shocked. She gasped and sat up in her seat. Looking at her was Darien, alive and smiling. **************************************************************************************
*Serena's POV*
It was a miracle. He was alive! I was so happy. I tried to hug him but it didn't turn out very well, since he was lying down. "Humph, you never thought you would be this glad to see me, hmm? Hey, I'm not dead or anything, Meatball Head. You can let go of me now," he chuckled. I guess I was hugging him too tight. I let go and smiled. "You had me worried to death, you conceited jerk. If you died, I would be dead too, you know." I answered. "Oh, so now it's conceited jerk? Whatever happened to moron, dimwitted human and all those other insults?" he asked. "I got tired of them, Mr. CJ. AND DON'T CALL ME MEATBALL HEAD!" I yelled. "Okay, fine. Whatever you say, Meatball Brains." He said. "Well look, if you're going to insult me all day, then I shouldn't have to stay here to hear them. I'll just leave right now." I threatened and got up to go. "No wait. Don't go. I was just joking. Please stay." He said while giving me the puppy face look. I laughed. He looked so innocent…and goofy! "I'd stay but I really have to go. You need your rest and I'm expected back at my room. I'll come back later." I said. "I'll be waiting." He replied with a mischievous grin on his face. I walked to the door but I was half there when I felt extremely dizzy. Everything was spinning round and round. "D-Darien? W-Why is the room spinning? It's making me d-dizzy." I said while desperately trying not to fall. "The room isn't spinning, Serena. Are you okay?" was the last thing I heard when I couldn't see and hit the floor. Everything went black. **************************************************************************************
(Emergency Room of Tokyo General)
*Serena's POV*
When I woke up, everything was pitch black and dark. It must have been night. "Darien? Dr. Samato? Anyone?" I said into the dark air. Something grabbed my hands and I screamed. "Relax, Serena. It's only me." A voice said. I recognized that voice. "D-Darien?" "Yeah, it's me. Are you feeling okay?" he asked. That was when I realized that my head was throbbing. "My head really hurts. Where is everyone? Is it nighttime already? Why didn't you turn on a light?" I asked. "Serena…the light is on. Can't you see it? Can you see me?" he asked. "N-No. I can't see you or the light. What's going on? Are you playing a joke on me?" I asked nervously. "Serena, open your eyes. Open them wide." He ordered. I opened them as far as I could. I still didn't see anything except black. I grasped his hands tighter. "They're open, Darien. They're open as far as they can be opened. D-Darien…I can't see…" **************************************************************************************
So what'd you think? How was chapter 4? What do you think will happen? Is Serena really blind? Find out in chapter 5!
"N-No. I can't see you or the light. What's going on? Are you playing a joke on me?" I asked nervously. "Serena, open your eyes. Open them wide." He ordered. I opened them as far as I could. (Emergency Room)
*Serena's POV*
"Darien, what's happening to me? Why can't I see?" I asked with tears streaming down my face. "Shh…Serena. Don't worry. I'm going to get the doctor. Wait right here and don't move," he said. "NO! Don't leave me all alone!" I yelled. So he stayed with me and held me tight, while I experienced my first moments of being blind. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile………….
(Cherry Hill Temple)
*Author's POV*
"Hey Lita. What's up?" asked Raye as Lita climbed the big steps up to the temple. "Nothing much. I just feel depressed. I don't think we should have yelled at Serena the other day." Lita answered. "Yeah, me too. I guess I was too hard on the meatball head." Raye admitted as she sighed. "Hi Raye. Hi Lita," Amy greeted as she appeared above the huge stone steps, "You guys aren't the only ones who feel bad about Serena. I shouldn't have been so harsh." "You're telling me," said a voice that belonged to the shadow leaning against a tree. Mina emerged into the light, looking sad. "Maybe we should apologize to her." She suggested. "I called her yesterday but her mom said that she wasn't home," said Lita, "I'm going to try again tonight. By the way, did any of you hear about that truck accident that happened the day before yesterday?" "Oh yeah, I heard about it on the news but I didn't really pay attention. Do any of you have the newspaper? We could read about it now." Amy said. "I've got today's paper. Chad bought it for Grandpa but of course my lazy-bones gramps didn't feel like reading it. I'll go get it from Chad." Said Raye. Just as she said that, Chad came strolling by. Raye ran to him and asked him for the newspaper. Chad went back to his room and got the paper. He gave it to Raye and she went back to the group. "Here it is. Wow, it made the front page. Let's see, 25-year Old Man Hit By A Truck While Saving A Woman. Hey, this sounds like my kind of guy." She giggled and turned to the page where the article was printed. She scanned through for the interesting part of the article and gasped. "OH MY GOD!" she screamed and dropped the newspaper. "What?" asked the rest of the scouts. Raye's skin was very pale and she looked like she had seen a ghost. Amy picked up the paper and read where Raye left off. "Holy mackerel…" she said as she read the article. "What? What is it? Read it, Amy!" shouted Lita and Mina. Amy trembled while she held the paper and stuttered as she read what Serena had read in the morning. Tears formed at the rims of Lita's eyes as she said, "No…Serena. Come on guys! We have to get to the hospital quick!" And she ran off, with the others following closely behind. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Serena's POV*
It seemed like forever as I cried into Darien's shirt. I was back in my room with Darien at my side. Dr. Samato had just said 15 minutes earlier, the most horrible words I ever heard.
~Flash~
"I'm really sorry, Serena. It seems that when you hit your head yesterday, it really was serious. I guess it hurt your vision. At the back of your head is a large bump and that was probably caused by the sidewalk." The doctor had said. She looked at Darien and said, "Could you please take her back to her room, Mr. Chiba? There is a little freezer in her room and there are ice cubes in it. Put them in a bag and wrap a towel around it. Put it on her pillow and let her head rest on it. Then you can stay with her if you want but you will stay need your rest, understand?" "Yes, doctor." I heard Darien say. Then he picked me up and carried me in his arms back to my room. He did exactly what Dr. Samato ordered him to do.
~Flash~
So I'm lying in bed and all is now quiet. Then Darien asks, "How are you feeling?" I was angry and shot up the bed like a cannon and snapped, "Now that's a stupid question, Darien. How do you think I feel? How would you feel if you just found out that you were blind?" He stayed quiet and I realized what I had just said. I sighed and apologized, "I'm sorry. It's just that I'm under a lot of pressure. I 'm worried. I'm blind and I can't see. What am I going to do about school? I was doing so well, but now this had to happen. And what about my family? I won't be able to see them ever again. Well, I'm glad that I'll never see my brother Sammy again but my mom and dad. The only way I can see them is from memories. I won't be able to see Molly, Melvin, Andrew and everyone else. How am I going to get around? I'm already clumsy as it is. I can't stay home forever." Darien was still quiet. But then he said, "You know, Meatball Head, you're kind of like me in a way." All I could say was "Huh?" "Well, you said that you'll never see your parents again. I will never see my parents ever." He said. "What do you mean?" I asked. "I don't know if I should be telling you this. But I think it's about time that someone else knew about this besides Andrew. When I was six, I was in a car accident with my parents. I was the only one who survived. My parents were killed. When I woke up, I couldn't remember anything. The doctors said I had amnesia. I lived in an orphanage after that until I was old enough to get a job and get my own place. I met Andrew during that time and we went to school together. He was the only one who cared. He was, is, like a brother. But every once in a while, I feel all alone. I don't have a mom, a dad or any siblings. At least you know that your parents will be there for you, even if you can't see them." He said. I began to cry all over again. I didn't know that the biggest jerk alive lived through all this. I felt him come closer and say, "I knew I shouldn't have told you this. Now I've got to live through another Serena's crying flood." He sighed and put his arm around me. Then I heard someone call my name…and it wasn't Darien… ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So who is the mysterious stranger? I've left you all another cliffhanger! Heehee! ^.^
