Action Shooting...the Most Fun You'll Ever Have with a Gun in Your Hand!!!

February 7, 2009

After a one-month layoff for the holidays, the match series resumed on a beautiful February Saturday. We had ten shooters show up for 3 fun stages of fire, good conversation, and some tasty burgers and hotdogs for lunch (Good Job, Johney!)

The first stage was the classic El Presidente', where shooters face the spectators, turn and fire two rounds at each of three targets, reload, and fire two more rounds at each. It sounds simple, but it actually involves several important skills. The shooter must have a smooth draw, be able to achieve a proper stance quickly, acquire a good sight picture while still moving, and perform a smooth reload, then get back on target - fast! Most of the shooters did fairly well, and a few showed some real skill...

(Good job, Kelly!)

Here's a unique view of the stage;

The second stage was called Friend or Faux Pas. The shooters were confronted with a wall with several small windows, behind which were 13 targets with graphical indicators attached. Through those windows, the competitors had to visually judge if the graphic showed a clear threat or not. Picture of an AK-47? Threat! Picture of a cell phone? No threat. There was one special target though; a target with a picture of a nice, big pistol...and a badge. If anyone shot the special target, they would get zero points for the stage. I'm proud to announce that none of our shooters shot the Sheriff!

Here's our beloved Match Director taking a ridiculously long time to finish Friend or Faux Pas...

and here's a member of the Navy Spec War community, showing how it's done.

The third stage was called "Cold Steel". It was deceptively simple, and very challenging. Five rocking steel targets and one stationary plate, one hit per target, finish with the static plate. Do this three times and add the times up to calculate the score. Whoever shot all of the plates the fastest would win the stage. The key to winning a steel plate stage is not to shoot fast, but to avoid missing!
