LEEDS FESTIVAL 29/08/99

CATATONIA @ LEEDS

After a superb performance by the Fun Loving Criminals, the audience at Leeds were highly excitable and ready to rock. And what better band to rock to than the mighty Catatonia. Cerys and the boys walked on stage with confidence, Cerys looking as beautiful as ever in a sparkling orangy/pink dress - a very revealing dress as a few blokes around me pointed out, but I wasn't looking - honest! The set began with "Storm The Palace" which soon got everyone in the spirit. My memories of the order of the songs is somewhat hazy - maybe it's the fact that simply breathing in the air at a festival is enough to get you high! Still I do recall the following songs: "Do You Believe In Me?" "Valerian" "She's A Millionaire" "Karaoke Queen" "I Am The Mob" "Dead From The Waist Down" "Road Rage" "Mulder and Scully" "You've Got A Lot To Answer For" "Nothing Hurts" "Strange Glue". Cerys decided to try and challenge Huey from FLCs with her favourite joke, after his witty contribution about "blowing chunks" (a crude joke!). She chose the old "lobster" joke and this really helped the band to build up a rapport with the audience. And as the rain began to fall, I don't think anyone cared and as the set came to a close, everyone cheered and chanted for the beautiful Cerys. And you know what? Not many could be bothered to see Blur and left after Catatonia. In my mind I think Catatonia headlined Leeds 99. Sweet Catatonia.
Unfortunately the photos we took of Catatonia are very distant and of poor quality..however.. here goes....

US @ LEEDS '99

Beer, beer, beer.....and it's only 11 am!

Alan grimacing for the camera!

OTHER BANDS WE MANAGED TO PHOTOGRAPH

This is Fungus, a band we first saw @ the Unison gig earlier this year. Check out the album, "FungusAmungus" - it rocks!

The Divine Comedy, with the beautiful Neil Hannon. Their set was amazing and it was so poignant when they performed the Pop Singer's Fear Of The Pollen Count, just as the sun burst through the clouds :)

We first saw the Big Leaves when they were supporting Catatonia in March @ Northumbria Uni. They're very Welsh. They're very talented. What more can we say?

Oh dear Lord above! What in heaven's name was Kevin Rowland doing at Leeds Festival? And to add insult to injury, what was Kevin Rowland doing at Leeds Festival in a babydoll dress and precious little underneath??! A 15 minute set, thank God. Still, to be fair, it was brave of him to stand up there so we could all laugh at him.....it was worth it for comedy value alone!
