Christopher Columbus

In 1992 Brazil issued this se-tenant stamp to commemorate the 500 years of Discovery of America and the Christopher Columbus. In order to compose the "se-tColumbus and his warship Santa Mariaenant" to honour the event the artist has used the following elements : in the first stamp, the figure of the discoverer Christopher Columbus and the rudimentary quadrant; in the second stamp, the two caravels - Pinta and Nina and the warship Santa Maria - are presented in a stylized way. Connecting both stamps there are a map showing the route followed by Columbus’ fleet and a horizontal strip symbolizing the sea. The legend "America" and the PUASP logotype are shown on the stamps. PUASP stands for Postal Union of Americas, Spain and Portugal who used to issue stamp on a particular theme in each year.
