The Snow Goose

The Greenland's stamp shown here features a snow goose. The stamp was releasedThe Snow Goose in 1988 by Greenland .  Probably the most abundant goose in the Arctic, the Snow Goose, Anser caerulescens,  breeds throughout northern Canada, Alaska, Siberia and the islands to the north. In February 1999 the United States government relaxed hunting restrictions on the Snow Goose in an attempt to reduce their numbers which had grown in the past three decades from 800,000 birds to an estimated five million birds. Unlike other geese that just bite off the green blades of grass, the Snow Goose pulls the plant up by the roots thus destroying their food supply on the breeding grounds.
