  Red-breasted Geese

The total number of Red-breasted Geese, Branta ruficollis,   is about 25,000 birds,The red-breasted goose including about 10,000 young non-breeding birds. They breed only on the peninsulas of Taimyr, Yamal, and Gydan on the Arctic coast of Russia. They winter near the Danube River Delta in Romania. They nest in small colonies of no more than six pairs which are established close to the nests of the Peregrine Falcon or the Rough-legged Buzzard. These birds of prey never harm the geese because, it seems, that they never hunt near their nests and so do not regard the geese as prey. They are on everybody's list of endangered species. One of the species can be found on a stamp of Romania issued in 1973.
