The Solitary Path
To Coven, or Not to Coven?
This is a highly personal choice, on which opinions vary greatly.
I am, and have always been, a solitary Wiccan.
Not because I don't have access to a Coven; there are several in my area, some of which have graciously invited me to participate in their rituals.
Not because I think I know everything there is to know about Wicca. When we stop learning, we stop growing, and I have always actively sought out other people for discussion and other sources of information from which to learn.
Not because I feel the need to hide this aspect of my life. I wear a pentagram around my neck, on my finger, and sometimes in my hair. My home is filled with assorted magickal tools and symbols, most of which are on open display.
I decided on the Solitary Path for two main reasons. First, I believe that a person's faith--whatever that faith may be--is a fundamental and deeply personal part of who that person is. What you derive from your faith, and how you interact with what you consider to be Divine, is a completely unique experience; and this is as it should be. Some people get so lost within the politics and jargon of the group they choose to worship with that they lose sight of the real purpose and their individual relationship with Divinity turns into the rote of the group, not a one-to-one interaction.
Secondly, as a Wiccan, I practice magick. In doing so, my intent is as vital to the outcome as any magickal tools or words I use to focus and cast the spell. Practicing alone insures that my intent--and my intent alone--is what is put forth. Two people can cast the same spell with very different intent in their hearts and get very different results. This is not to say that differences in intent inply malice on the part of anyone but yourself. It simply speaks to the fact that we are all unique parts of the collective whole, and intent is as individual as your fingerprint.
As a solitary Wiccan, I have had the priviledge to interact with, learn from, and teach many people from many different faiths and paths. It is my hope that the writings on these gaes help you to find your faith, and a means to express it, that is right for you.
