4x01 Herrenvolk

Mulder runs off...again. He wants to save his mother, but it seems he and CSM have the same agenda for once. When he comes back Scully runs to him like she wants to cover him in kisses, but then remembers that she's his professional partner and settles for running her hands over him instead. Mulder cries by his mother's bedside, and allows Scully to pull him down for a tender hug. Skinner looks suspiciously bothered by their intimacy, but leaves to give them privacy. Scully and Mulder then have a tender conversation with his mother right there! Get your own room, for Pete's sake.

4x10 Terma

Scully keeps silent about Mulder's whereabouts, is declared to be in contempt of Congress, and is jailed. They keep asking her uncomfortable questions about Mulder that she won't answer and then suddenly he appears in the courtroom, his eyes zeroing in on her...and her face is one of utter happiness. Scully can't get to him fast enough after the hearing is adjourned, and they hug. Skinner looking uncomfortable, again. I think he wants Scully for himself...and the agents reluctantly turn their attention to him.

4x08 Paper Hearts

A serial-killer of little girls plays with Mulder's mind and makes him doubt his memories about Samantha's abduction--maybe she was killed by this guy, instead. Scully is very comforting and hates Roche for doing this to Mulder. But she isn't a pansy and won't let Mulder off the hook when he gets out of control and hits Roche; it compromises his integrity. Later Mulder wants to dig up where he believes another grave to be but Scully wants to wait for a forensics team. His "Help me, Scully" breaks her down and they dig together frantically. Mulder hugs Scully around her waist-bottom region at the end while she holds his head.

Scully becomes attracted to a man bearing a hallucination-inducing tattoo when Mulder is forced to go on vacation. He doesn't understand the mood she's in, and says all the wrong things. Still, he calls her from everywhere and is concerned, leaping to the phone when it rings. She goes on a date with the tattoo guy, then almost gets killed by him. Mulder is angered and saddened by what has happened...and almost tells Scully that her life is his life!

4.14 Memento Mori

Memento Mori Ad

Scully discovers that she has cancer. Mulder is the only person she tells, at first. He won't believe that there's nothing that can be done for her. While she checks herself into a hospital and writes him a journal of love, thinking he is pursuing his own interests, he is frantically trying to find the answers that will save her life. He wants to set up a meeting with Cancerman, basically sell himself for Scully. Skinner won't let him, but then does it himself (what are they trying to say about Skinner and his feelings for Scully?). At the end we get a very tender moment, hugs and a kiss on the forehead.

Scully ventures a guess as to why Mulder gave her the Apollo 11 keychain—he answers flippantly, which is to say that she pretty much hit the nail on the head. Mulder has no qualms about stripping in font of Scully, though she turns away. She may or may not have been dying to look at his reflection in the window.

Scully is in the hospital having tests, so we don't see her at all. Mulder is trying to figure out what happened to his files while Skinner tries to hide that he's the perpetrator. He tries to explain that they are on the same side, but Mulder's only thinking with half his mind...the other half is with Scully.

Mulder wakes up with the blood of two other people on his shirt and no recollection of what has happened to him. Scully is the first person he calls, and she rushes right over, just in time to help him out of his shower. Mulder is getting massive migraines, and Scully gets really pissed at the doctor responsible. Mulder wants to recall his memories of Samantha so much that for a moment he wants to shoot Scully. But of course he does not, and collapses in near-despair. Scully shares Mulder's pain, and sweetly lays her head on his back.
