Women in Documentary Film . Presentation by Moira Sullivan at Tempo Documentary Film Festival, Stockholm, Sweden. March 17, 2000. Södra Teatern.

Documentary film has been a specific forum for women in which to critique the power structure, and the binary way in which women are left outside of the male gaze in film. It has been burgeoning since the second wave of the women’s movement in the Western world and is now used by women globally. Embracing the film medium for women, has required a sort of bisexuality-- learning how to express ideas in film language principally shaped by men, and learning to speak as women. Documentary film as opposed to the budget required for a narrative film has also been a comparatively more affordable route for women. A look today at some historical and recent work in documentary film and the different ways in which women use the medium.Since no one creates anything out of the blue or in a vacuum, a short history of documentary film and how women fit provided. Maya Deren Weekend in Gradisca, Italy, May 19-20, 2000. 'Dissolvenze' in Italian, means 'Fading,' and as part of a series of programs on art and cinema arranged by the cultural association Gli Iconauti, - or 'People of the Moving Image', the work of the American avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren of the 1940's and 1950's was shown at a restored theater called Sala Bergamas in the town of Gradisca north of Venice, introduced by the mayor of the town. Prints of Deren's films came from the British Film Institute as well as Italian Cinemateques. In this little valley people of all ages watched the work of a filmmaker who single-handedly forwarded the American independent film movement. Several viewers wrote in one sentence why Deren's films are important today: according to Andrea Maggi: 'Maya Deren dances in silence, and everybody hears her'.
