THE DARKEST HOURS

Those darkest hours
Between midnight and dawn
When all you do
Is wait for daylight.
A few hours sleep
Then like a small child
Your slumber is broken
And you wake in a fret.

Fretting for someone
You care deeply for
But we don't get
What we wish any more.
Room to room
You continually roam
It's the break of daylight
You're waiting for.

Looking in the mirror
Surprised at what you see
Thinner and drawn
Is that really me?
A finger traces the new dark lines
So prominent now
Where none used to be.

Those darkest hours
Between midnight and dawn
When everyone's sleeping
Are the most forlorn.
I need to get through them
Then I'll be alright
It's easier to cope in the daylight
I'll manage again
Until comes once more
Those darkest hours
Between midnight and dawn.
