CIS22 Janet Brecher 1-24-2001
Lecture Notes
- You should have read by now Days 1, 3, 4, 19. Next Monday, you should have gone through the chapter exercises just mentioned, and have read also Days 5 and 6.
- TODAY: Working on homepage "index.html"
- I check my e-mail often, 6 am to 10 pm, weekdays, not weekends. If problems, your stuck, something doesn't work, e-mail me or go to computer lab or Learning Resource Center 484-8455 Mon - Thu 8am - 9:30 pm, Fri 8am-4:30pm, Sat 9am -3pm. If
something doesn't work, just shut it all down, and restart and follow directions closely, rereading them.
- My noon class has no computers, so it is not expected that you will do all homework in class. In fact, it is expected you will do all work outside class hours. However, if you are quick enough, you are welcome to follow along on your computers.
- Checked to see if people had name listed for their own web page on WebCity. Some names were added, but some people just added class within the week. All submitted names have just been created accounts. If your name is there, you can Telnet. If your name is not, you cannot Telnet into your account, because your account hasn't been created yet.
- You are welcome to write on assignment handouts.
- Assignments must be up on web page the Monday immediately following when
the assignment was given. (See exception for Lots of Tags assignment below.) Be
sure to give them the exact name I tell you to in the directory (folder) I tell you to, or I won't find them and will mark them late.
- Assignments, copy of syllabus, etc., may be found in the Instructor files. You
must access this from Ethan Way Center (EWC) computers (not from home, not
from ARC). Here's how to get to them:
- Go to My Computer, which has been renamed for the computer, which is
the room number (150) + "S" + your station number. It is in the upper
lefthand corner of the desktop.
- >>My Computer >common on EWC H: (drive) >Instructors (folder)
>Brecher (folder) >CIS 22 (folder).
- Handed out default page "index.html" assignment, due Monday. 1-29-2001
- Note that after class instructor said the Lots of Tags assignment, which she handed out today (two pages, one with a little cloud on it.), However, after class she mentioned that it is not due until the following Monday, 2-5-2001. The More Tags document in my instructor folder on H drive.
- Hello, World "hello.html" Copies handed out to those who weren't here last week. You should have done it in class or done it. However, I use it as an example to logging into Telnet and some attributes (italics, bold, header, missing code).
- View the web city home page and then your home page in the Internet Explorer web
browser:
- >>Internet Explorer (blue "e" icon on desktop)
- In address (in bar near top of screen) type "http://webcity.arc.losrios.cc.ca.us/" and
press Enter.
- Now to get to your index.html web page, either
- add "~lastnaf/" (lastna = 1st 6 letters of your last name, f = your first name
initial) to the end of the address, so it now appears as
"http://webcity.arc.losrios.cc.ca.us/~lastnaf/" and press Enter,
- or click on your name on the WebCity home page.
- You should see a generic page for you to fill out from Telnet
- Someone couldn't Telnet from home. Here's how, again. There are three ways:
- >Start >Program >Accessories >Telnet.
- If not there, use >Start >Find.
- Look in "c:\"
- named "telnet".
- Then copy one of the shortcuts, with a rounded arrow on it, to your
desktop:
- Right click on shortcut in find list, >copy.
- Go to desktop
- Right click, >paste.
- From now on, you can use this easy shortcut.
- >click Telnet shortcut
- (Student suggest another method: >Start >Run, then type in "Telnet.", tap Enter key.)
- Or you can just click here! (And it will go right to WebCity and ask for your login name and password.)
- To get to your Unix account (again?)
- >Connect (menu)
- If webcity is listed as >1. webcity.arc.losrios.cc.ca.us, click on it.
- If webcity is not listed, >remote
- Hostname field, fill in webcity.arc.losrios.cc.ca.us".
- Port: "Telnet"
- TermType: "VT100"
- >Connect Next, you get the logon screen.
- At the prompt "login" type the first six letters of your last number plus your first initial (same as your zip account), then press enter. Note that you can tap delete but not backspace or tab as enter login and password, or else you have to start over again.
- At the prompt "password" type in "123456" or whatever password you might have
changed this to - next week, everyone will change their password. I don't want to
add to the problems this week by having someone forget their password).
- Please note: As we found out, remember, if you don't log in quick enough, or stay idle on Telnet too long while working on your web page, you will timed out and the unix will log you out. If so, follow the steps above for "To get to your Unix account (again)"
- To list the files and folders within your user root directory, type "ls" and tap Enter. All web pages to be viewed, must be in the public_html folder within your main directory. This should be the only folder or file in your user root directory. Therefore, at this point, change to that directory using the Unix change directory command. Type in "cd public_html" (with a space between them) and tap Enter.
- TODAY. We're going to edit the page index.html. It is listed in public_html as
index.html. This is your home, main page. Anything off that page, e.g., hello.html, is something you have created from scratch.
- Start editing index.html with the Pico editor by typing at the prompt: pico index.html, then tap Enter. This page should say "This is my personal page." This is the same page we pulled up on the web (see above.)
- Replace all the text between the double equal signs:
= = REPLACE THIS TEXT = =
- Do not remove the tags, those items between angle (greater-than, less-than)
brackets "<" and ">". If you are missing one of the tags or fail to put one in, it will disform the formatting or text may not show up at all.
- In future versions of HTML, and when using Javascripting and Perl, a set of
closing HTML tags are required. Therefore, in this class I will always use closing
tags so the pages will still work on browsers in the future.
- NOTE ABOUT TAG ORGANIZATION AND NEATNESS: Leave the extra
vertical spaces, which programmers and professional web page builders in the
industry suggest to keep programming clear. When you build your own documents, use them. Instructor says that tags are not case sensitive, so can be upper or lower case, but suggests putting them in upper case so that they stand out more, but you have to be attentive to turning off caps lock when typing regular text, then.
- Also, HTML ignores white spaces, tabs, vertical (Enter key) and only puts one space between words, except where formatted by HTML tags. Therefore, all spaces beyond a single white space between words is compacted into a single white space when viewed on a browser. So, for example, if you hit the Enter key four times, without tags, the next text will show up on a browser a space to the right of the previous text, not four spaces down.
- Between the <TITLE> </TITLE> tags, the text placed here will appear in the title bar in the web browser, not on you main page. The title tags are always placed between the header tags, as shown on the index page.
- Pico uses arrow keys and backspace keys. You can't use the mouse. Pico does not have an undo key. Perhaps erase the text first then insert.
- <H1> </H1>is the highest level heading.
- Save your changes frequently (like in this case, after entering each block of text
between tabs) . . . Ctrl-o, (Name appears - index.html), Enter.
- Save and exit when finished for the time being. Ctrl-x (Do you want to save
changes?) y. (Chance to change file name index.html - don't! Leave it as is in this
case, because if you use any other name, it will not come up as your homepage
when browsing your public_html subdirectory.)
- View your home page on the browser, by either typing it in and/or hitting the Refresh icon (or F5). You should see the changes you made to index.html
- Instructor showed how taking off HTML tags by going into Pico editing her own
index.html page will mess up viewing with the document by removing the formatting.
She saves the document. She refreshed the browser page when she went back to it.
When your page is messed up, look at a fellow student's page. Click on >view >source, and compare the HTML code - the tags.
- Showed some tags, which can be overlapped/ combined, by experimenting on the
hello.html document that are in Day 3 or Day 4.
- <B>Bold</B>
- <U>Underline</U>
- <I>Italics</I>
- <H1>Largest Header Tag</H1>
- Advise: Do a little coding in Pico, save it, then view in browser to make sure it works, then do a little more coding, etc.
- Advise: Don't just put picture on homepage, because may have picture turned off.
- Q. If have pictures turned off, can still see picture by right-clicking on picture and select
"Show picture."
- Pretty Pages with sound:
- http://www.saczoo.com/ This is in book. The rest don't.
- Http://www.balthauser.com/ Hard to get out of . Try typing in a new address or go back to history and click on another. It doesn't help to click stop or back.
