Banality is the opposite of Glamour - the active or passive destruction of creativity through apathy or intent. Banality heralds what Changelings fear most: the cold of Autumn, and the coming of winter which means the destruction of all Changelings. One of the greatest enemies to the Dreaming's children of the faerie is Banality -- the force that crushes creativity and dreams either passively or actively. Banality can destroy the faerie soul. Banality exists as people who demand to know "when are you gonna grow up?" or order someone to "get a haircut, get a real job!"; people who see little value in artistic endeavours, forget that life is for living, and just settle for existing; or people who think money and material possessions are of ultimate importance, then try to compensate by pencilling in "quality time" with their loved ones.
Banality is also, in essence, disbelief. The fact that one is so resolved in the mundane world that the mere concept of something beyond that is nearly impossible. It is the attempt to control everythign in one's existence with the solid concept in one's mind that "oh that just can't be real", and thus to you, it isn't. The inability to dream the impossible dream, or to even, in some cases, allow anyone else to dream it either.
Banality's slow encroachment on the minds of everyone in the world is what the Changelings refer to with dread as The Autumn. It is tactile to a faerie soul; it feels like cold and despair given form. If Banality wins, the world will be plunged into Endless Winter and the Changelings will no longer be able to survive on earth ... their faerie aspects will be crushed under the soulless thumb of Reason.
Banality is disbelief in the worst way. It is anything that will remove the wonder, or that teaches us not to belive in magic, faeries, or other items of the Dreaming. In the game, it has the following effect.
* The banality is the rating that determines the difficulty of the cantrip the Fae is trying to use. The banality of the caster or target +4((Whichever is higher))
* In order to enchant someone the Fae must overcome the target's banality.
* Beings with a banality of 8 or higher physically affect changelings. Changelings will become sick or edgy around these people. The longer the person is near the changeling, the more it will affect the changeling. The following list will show the normal banality rating.
