Wants vs. Needs

Many people underestimate their ability to distinguish between a Need and a Want when buying their first car. Here are a few tips to help in this process.

The first thing you should do is figure out the "needs" for your first car. The needs are the accessories and functions that are mandatory to help you to use your vehicle to make your life easier.

What are the reasons for the car?
     - Is it for pleasure?
     - Is it for family?
     - Is it for work?

Once you have figured out Why you need the car, then you can move on to the wants.

"Wants" are all of the extra accessories that would make the car more flashy but you could live without.

The best way to figure out what your wants and needs are is to make a list. Be sure to be honest with yourself when making your list and do not talk yourself into putting a "want" in the "need" column.

Example:

     Needs                                          Wants

     automatic transmission               heated seats
     good gas mileage                         sun/moon roof
     roomy backseat                           navigation

By making a clear list for yourself, you will have a better idea of the types of cars to look for. This is a very important step to do so that you do not regret any of your decisions later down the road.

Below is a pre-made sheet that you can use to help you to make your list!
