Hole 8: The Elevator

As our visit was starting to wrap up, Doug suggested we all get together for one last picture in the main hallway next to the fabulous awards and memorabilia.

A group photo Al Carlson lined us up and we tried to look as normal as one can expect: (l-r) Gordon, Rand, Doug and Richard.

After the picture was taken, Richard suggested we return to the conference room to wrap up our incredible visit with some last minute issues before heading back to the motel. Upon returning to the conference room, we noticed that everything was just as we had left it a few minutes before, except that the whiteboard had been wiped clean.

Turning around, we also noticed that Rand had disappeared once again and we were left with Al and Richard. As we reviewed the events of the day, Doug realized that he had forgotten to take a picture of Nelah's dress, which is enclosed in a glass case directly across from Catherine's dress. He grabbed his camera, excused himself and headed out into the hallway to go take the picture.

Doug commented, "As I walked down the main hallway, I made sure my camera was ready so I could take the picture and quickly get back to the group. Looking up towards the end of the hallway, I noticed someone approaching, so I sidestepped to get out of the way. Out of the shadows I realized the person was Rand, and he seemed to be in a hurry. He was fishing through his pockets for something and finally withdrew a single key. He stopped abruptly in front of the elevator and pressed the single "down button" next to the door. I sort of chuckled to myself thinking he really didn't need a key in an elevator.

Rand in the elevator "As the doors opened, Rand stepped inside. He seemed to be using the key in a panel hidden from my view. At that moment I quickly stepped out from my position in the shadows and snapped this picture. Rand turned just as the doors closed, but I had disappeared back down the hallway towards the conference room."

We had passed by the elevator doors on both levels of the building several times throughout the day, but had never been given the opportunity to use it. Each time we were led from one floor to the other, our guides always insisted we take the stairs. It was almost as if there was a combined effort to keep us out of that elevator.

Gordon said "Our final few hours had been great, and getting the group picture was very cool. I sort of kidded about the value of the photo to us Riven Fans. While we stood waiting for Al to click the picture, I noticed that Rand seemed a little preoccupied with something. He looked as if he had some important unfinished business that he needed to attend to.

"When Doug later recounted to me the incident in the hallway with Rand, I thought he was pulling my leg. It was strange, but so were a lot of things in this building. Maybe we were reading more into this, but I don't think so. That funny tingling sense was coming back to me again and deep down I wondered if there wasn't a secret harbored within this building that we would discover before we left. One can only hope..."

Doug said, "As I walked,.., no,.. snuck back to the conference room after taking the photo of Rand in the elevator, two thoughts loomed in my mind: Where was Rand going in that elevator, and why was it so secret that it required a special key? Whatever the answers were, they would only be found if we were able to get a single glimpse, (or better yet, a photo) inside of that elevator. Or if we were really lucky, we might even be able to follow Rand..."
