Experience Movie Magic: Tabitha, Teen Reviewer

Rated: PG-13
Running Time: 1 hour 25 minutes

Synopsis: Two strangers meet in a fortunate accident and spend a few hours together. Fate seperates them, but destiny is not through with the pair.

Most romantic comedies are somewhat mediocre, lacking in humor and originality. Serendipity, to my pleasant surprise, easily surpasses the typical romantic comedy mold. It definately kept me laughing all the way through. This was due not only to the talents of the lead role actors, John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale, although they did a splendid job, but also the supporting characters played by Molly Shannon, Eugene Levy, and Jeremy Piven.

Normally, I find the story of two people meeting and falling in love immediately because it is destiny totally ridiculous and unbelievable. Serendipity however, pulls it off wonderfully. maybe that's because they dont say I love you right away like in most movies, but instead, you watch them fall n love, they dont have to say it. And at the end of their first night together, they let fate decide whether it is meant to be. But "fate has a sense of humor". As she hands him her number, a bus flies by, and carries the piece of paper away. Sarah (Beckinsale) believes this is fate telling them to back off. So he writes his name and number on a 5 dolar bill, and she buys something with it instead of looking at it. She writes hers in a book which she the sells to a used bookstore. If the numbers make it back to eachother, then it is meant to be. Seven years later, when both are about to be wed, the signs keep pointing back to eachother, and both ensue a search for the other. Dozens of times they almost run into eachother. Like when John places his chewed gum on the back of a bench and then Sarah sits there and accidentally touches it. It keeps you on the edge of your seat in a way other romantic comedies don't.

Bottomline: It's a wonderfully pulled off formula of romance and comedy, and if guys have to sit through a romance, this is the one they should see.
