Synopsis:A group of high tech clever thieves plot to rob three Las Vegas casino's.
The story and script themselves make the movie good, even without the big names attached. I have never seen the original, but I have heard that it really wasn't much, only a reason for the "Rat Pack" to get together for fun and make another movie. Director Steven Soderbergh, who has yet to disappoint me, takes the story further, making it interesting and fun and clever. No, it's not a serious Oscar type like Erin Brockovich or Traffic, but he definately brings an average movie way up to a level many directors would have failed to achieve. The clever jokes, especially by the main characters played by George Clooney and Brad Pitt (mmmmm) kept me laughing, and the series of surprises, well they surprised me, whereas many movies that try to surprise are so predictable.
Julia Roberts doesn't have a huge part in the movie, but even so, her talent and presence makes the film even better. I read one critic who couldn't say one bad thing about her performance, so instead he knocks her looks. Julia Roberts isn't a super model, but she has a beauty and glamour about her, he's just bitter she's so good and wants to say something bad about her, which seriously, is so hard to do. George Clooney and Brad Pitt play the two largest in a large assortment of roles. No complaints from me there. Even if Brad Pitt wasn't the epitome of perfection lookswise of man, his incredible talent would still keep him at the top of the best actors list. The other characters are funny, particularly Casey Affleck and Scott Cainn, who play brothers, and keep the film moving along at a good pace. I feel bad not naming all the actors by name, so let me just say all the characters were good on the writer's part, and all the actors did a good job portraying them. Another cool part to the movie was the beginning where Brad Pitt is teaching celebrities to play poker. It is mentioned by other people in one scene, then it actually shows him teaching WB stars like Holly Marie Combs (Charmed), Barry Watson (7th Heaven) and Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek). I am addicted to the WB, so I got a kick out of that.
Bottomline: This is a pretty good story brought to a whole other level by Soderbergh. It's fun and interesting, and you will love the cast.
