Synopsis: A man holds the emergency room of the hospital where his terminally ill son is dieing hostage in order to get his son's name on the heart transplant list.

On the outside, there is nothing wrong with this film. As usual, Denzel Washington delivers a very fine performance. Emotions are brought out of the audience, because we care what happens to the characters. But look at exactly what this movie is: A scam to make Americans feel guilty about not paying enough taxes to pay for everyone else's healthcare. Before I go running my mouth off about that, let me address the actual mechanics of the film. The acting is just fine. The script itself can get a little cheesy, but that's to be expected. And while I really did feel bad for John Q, after all I am not heartless, the fact that it is not my duty to pay for his child's healthcare really destroyed the entire premise of the movie.

If you see this movie, do not start voting for raises in taxes to pay for everyone else's healthcare just because you shed a few tears. THINK about this first. I do not owe any part of my life to anyone, and especially not everyone else, and neither do you. I do not earn my own right to live by paying for others to live, I have the right to live because I am human. Therefore, it is not my responsibility to save John Q's son's life. The government has no right to take away the money that I earned, and give it to him. That is the underlying principle completely ignored by this movie: Individual freedom. Do not call me heartless. That is what charities are for. I have no problem CHOOSING who I will help according to my own values, but the government has no right to take my money and choose for me. I would have been glad to throw some money John Q's way, by my own choice, and if I had that money to give away, and so would other people. But it is not my duty to do so, nor does anyone have any right to make me do so.

Bottomline: Don't fall for this movie. Don't even pay to see this movie because you are giving your money to support the terrible ideas of the movie.
