I do not generally enjoy this genre of films. In fact I never would have went to see this movie had it not been nominated for 13 Oscars. While it was not torture, I could not say I enjoyed this movie very much. However, I can appreciate it's superiority as a film on many levels. I did not read the book, but I hear it was pretty closely based on the classic tale. Perphaps I would have enjoyed it a little more if it weren't so long, again this type of adventure just isn't my thing. So maybe the length was necessary. I can't really point out any scenes I would have cut.
Although I am not one for this type of story, there were several things I particularly liked about the film. First of all, the film is excellent visually. Awesome landscapes of mountains and waterfalls and frightening characters gave the film a realistic yet magical feel. The acting was great, the characters were great, the story was great. It's a pretty great movie. Again, though, just not MY type of story.
Bottomline: The best word for this film is magical. If you like that sort of thing.
