Meeting Private Ryan
Miller-Half track! Cover!
Horvath-Who's doing the shooting, who's doing the shooting?
Miller-Get ready to move onto a fight. Take care of left, fight!
Mellish-Hold on and make sure they're down.
Henderson-Hundred and first! We're comin out. (?). We've been expecting a poll, that must have been it.
Miller-Captain Miller, Charlie Company, 2nd rangers.
Henderson-Corporal Henderson, Easy Company, five oh first.
Ryan-Ryan, first of five oh six.
Soldier-PFC Tobys, five oh six.
Miller-James Francis Ryan?
Ryan-Yes, sir. How'd you guess that?
Miller-Look like you guys got hit pretty hard.
Henderson-Yes, sir. Small unit action. They came in and beat the hell outta us with eighty eights. Tell you what, sir. If you're our relief, I'm gonna file a complaint.
Miller-Who's your C.O.?
Henderson-Woulda been Captain Jennings, sir. Afraid the best we could muster up right now is a corporal. So what are you guys all about?
Miller-We're here for him, Ryan.
Ryan-Me, sir?
Miller-James Francis Ryan of Iowa?
Ryan-Yes sir, uh, Peyton Iowa. (?). What is this about?
Miller-Your brothers were killed in combat.
Ryan-Whi, which ones?
Miller-All of them.
Ryan-Uh, all of them.
Miller-Yeah, I'm afraid so. Ah, you might wanna take some time with this, if there's someplace you wanna go and-
Soldier-What's this all about?
Soldier-Ryan lost his brothers.
Soldier-Which one?
Soldier-All of them.
Ryan-You, you came all the way here to tell me that?
Miller-Well, your, your going home. Our orders are to bring you back.
Ryan-Bring me back.
Miller-Corporal Henderson, ah, I don't mean to leave you more shorthanded but orders are orders. Any communication about when your gonna be relieved up here?
Henderson-Sir, there's no way to tell. I mean, we have no idea what's happening south of us.
Ryan-I have my orders too, sir. They don't include me abandoning my post.
Miller-I understand that, but this changes things.
Ryan-I don't see that it does, sir.
Miller-The Chief of Staff of the United States Army says it does.
Henderson-Sir, our orders are to hold this bridge at all costs. Our planes and the eighty second have taken out every bridge across the Merderet with the exception of two. One at Valognes, and this one here. We let the Germans take them, we're gonna loose our foothold and have to displace.
Miller-Private, your outfit wants to stay, that's one thing. Your party's over here.
Ryan-Sir, I can't leave until atleast reinforcements get here.
Miller-You have three minutes to gather your gear.
Ryan-Sir, what about them? I mean, there's barely hardly any of us as it-
Reiben-Hey asshole! Two of our guys died trying to find you, all right?
Ryan-Sir?
Miller-That's right.
Ryan-What were their names?
Mellish-Irwin Wade and Adrian Caparzo.
Ryan-Wade and...
Mellish-Caparzo.
Ryan-It doesn't make any sence. It doesn't make any sence, sir! Why, why, why do I deserve to go? Why not any of these guys? They all fought just as hard as me.
Miller-Is that what they're supposed to tell your mother when they send her another folded american flag?
Ryan-Tell her that when you found me, I was here. And I was with the only brothers that I have left. And there was no way I was gonna desert them. I think she'll understand that. There's not way I'm leaving this bitch.
Horvath-What are your orders?
Miller-Sargeant, we have crossed some strange boundary here. The world has taken a turn for the surreal.
Horvath-Clearly, but the question still stands.
Miller-I don't know. What do you think?
Horvath-You don't wanna know what I think.
Miller-No, Mike. I do.
Horvath-Well, part of me thinks the kid's right. He's asks what he's done to deserve this. He wants to stay here, fine. Let's leave him, go home.
Miller-Yeah.
Horvath-But another part of me thinks, what if by some miracle we stay and actually make it out of here? Someday we might look back on this and decide that saving Private Ryan was the one decent thing we were able to pull out of this whole god awful shitty mess. That's what I was thinking, sir. Like you said, capn'. We do that, we all earn the right to go home.
Miller-Oh boy.
