For Your Eyes Only was produced by Eon Productions in 1981. After the blockbuster success of Moonraker, Bond's popularity was at an all time high. Broccoli chose For Your Eyes Only as the Bond he wanted to use to keep that popularity high. This movie was also supposed to be huge, since it was very possible that this would be Roger Moore's last outing as Bond. This was the last movie in his five movie contract.
In this movie, a British spy trawler is sunk. On board that sub was a hi-tech encryption device called an ATAC which the British use to send launch instructions to their Polaris fleet. The British send James Bond to retrieve the ATAC, but when the Russians learn of the loss, the race is on to retrieve the ATAC. To complicate things, a crime lord known as "The Dove" plans to get the device for himself.
A NOTE ON THE THEME SONG: For Your Eyes Only was written by Bill Conti/Michael Leeson. The interesting thing about the song is not the song itself, but the title sequence, in which the singer appears in the sequence. This is the first time that happened in a James Bond title song. This song hit #4 on US charts, and #8 on UK charts. This song is considered the most sincere, emotional love song of the Bond songs.
MY GRADE: B+  This was the last movie Moore was obligated to be in, and I think it would have been wise of him to step down from the role at this time. I think this is Moore's last passable attempt at playing Bond. In the next to movies, he seems to have lost his touch. Octopussy and A View to a Kill are two of the most disappointing Bonds of the series.
BEST MOMENT: Blofeld finally meets his end. Blofeld, the main villain of most of the Connery Bond movies is finally killed by Bond. The only way this would have been better would be if it was Connery who got to kill him. He was after all, the one who went up against him the most. But, as long as it was Bond...
ALSO NOTABLE: *Bond climbing the cliff to Kristatos' hideout turns into quite a cliff-hanger. (Pun intended.)
*When Loch is in his car over hanging the cliff, Bond says, "You left this with Ferraro, I believe." With that he throws in the small dove pin into the car, which is just enough to start it tumbling over the hill.
DID YOU KNOW: *M is not in this movie. He is supposedly out somewhere. This is the only movie without the character of M to appear.
*Teresa Bond, Bond's deceased wife, is referenced (Bond visits her grave) for the first time since OHMSS.
