Rose woke up to see Jack buttoning his army jacket. She had to mention that he did look handsome in that military uniform. Rose put her robe on and got up. Jack knew that she was up as she reached for her robe.
"Morning," Jack whispered.
"Morning." Rose got up, and kissed Jack.
"How do you like it?" Jack posed for Rose.
"I wish that you weren't the one wearing it." Rose walked over to the window.
"Rose, please. Don't be like this the last day that we'll be together for a while."
"How can I not when I might never see you again?"
Jack dropped his head, and said, "Rose, I want you to promise me that you'll make each day count when I'm gone. To never give up on each day. No matter how hopeless life gets when I'm gone. Don't let go of our love and strength we have together. You, Max, and Audrey are the only ones that I love and have for a family. If anything happens to any of you, especially you, I'll never forgive myself."
"Jack, I'm sorry. It's just that I don't want you to go." Rose hugged him tight, and Jack held her tightly. "Now, you promise me something."
"Okay."
"That you'll come back, and that you'll write to me as many times you can."
"All right."
Jack and Rose still held each other. "Oh, Jack, this day has always been a nightmare to me."
"It has been for me, too, but I will come back."
Jack kissed Rose's forehead, picked up his bag, and started to walk downstairs. Rose followed him. Jack stood next to the window, since he was waiting for Johnny and Scott to give him the signal that they were ready to go down to the train station.
"I have something for you."
Jack handed Rose a small green velvet box. Rose took it, and looked at Jack. She opened it, and noticed a ring, which had a silver band and a small diamond, very dissimilar to her wedding ring.
"Jack, what is this?"
"It's a promise ring. Read the inside."
Rose took the ring out of its box, and read the engraved words 'Make It Count'. Jack took the ring gently from Rose and placed it on her right middle finger.
"Promise me now, Rose."
"I promise."
"And never let go of that promise."
"I'll never let go, Jack. I'll never let go."
Jack kissed Rose, and they held each other until Jack saw Johnny and Scott outside. They waved to him, and he waved back, still holding Rose in her arms.
"It's time for me to go, Rose."
Rose shook her head, and he kissed her one last time. She held back her tears, and Jack touched her face. He grabbed his bag and headed outside, closing the door behind him. Rose watched Jack out the window as he walked down their welcoming pathway. Jack turned around, and waved to her.
She waved back, and placed her hand on the window, and said, "I'll never let go. I promise."
Rose looked at her clock. It was six 'o clock. Max and Audrey wouldn't be up until eight or nine. So she wasn't going to make breakfast for at least an hour or two. She decided to go upstairs and get dressed. She did, and after that she went back into her room and made the bed. She lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling, wishing that Jack were lying next to her. He wasn't, and probably wouldn't be for a long time.
