Spider-Man

"Spider-Man" Rated PG-13
***.5/*****

This is a fairly good movie. I had a hard time deciding what grade to give it. Surprisingly enough, this big-budget, franchise comic book film, has better human elements than everything else.

Everybody knows about Spider-Man, and those scenes are entertaining and well done, but Peter Parker (the guy behind Spider-Man) is just a normal high school kid. The subplot of Peter's (Tobey Maguire) relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirstin Dunst) is very well developed. Peter has been in love with Mary Jane since the 4th grade, and it shows. This story develops gradually, with Mary Jane gradually becoming aware of Peter. Unlike many other movies, these scenes really drew me in. I actually cared about what happened here so much that it didn't really matter how many effects shots there were.

The scenes involving Spidey himself are also well done. They are definitely action packed, but it seems no more than... well, a comic book.
