The movie Shrek starring Mike Myers as an outcast and unfriendly Ogre is a funny parody of almost every fairy tale ever. The movie is set in a kingdom ruled by an unusually short man named Lord Farquaad who is voiced by John Lithgow. In his quest for a perfect kingdom he begins rounding up all the fairy tale creatures in his land. After Eddy Murphy's character, the talking donkey, who is simply known as "Donkey", escapes from the guards and is saved by Mike Myers he begins to follow him around. When Shrek returns home he finds that Lord Farquaad has dumped all the fairy tale creatures on his land. meanwhile, Farquaad had found that he needs to marry a princess to become a king and therefore have a perfect kingdom. he chooses a princess named Fiona who is locked in a tower (and is played by Cameron Diaz) over Cinderella and Snow White in a short mock off of, "The Dating Game" courtesy of the Magic Mirror. Shrek interrupts his contest to find someone to go rescue the princess for him and defeats all the contestants in a pro-wrestling style match. Lord Farquaad then sends him on the promise that he will get his land back. After boldly rescuing Fiona and "saving" Donkey from his run-in with the girl dragon they bring Fiona home. Fiona is incredibly upset at the less than orthdox rescue by her less than orthodox knight. However we quickly see that she is no ordinary princess herself.
The movie makes many allusions to countless fairly tales. there are the stock witches and fairies but also run-ins with the 3 blind mice, Pinnochio, Robin Hood, Cinderella, and Snow White. Snow White's other appearence comes when she is pushed onto Shrek's dinner table. Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers foil very well in the movie and provide a lot of humor. Like every other comedy, they had to throw in a "matrix" gag. Though the movie is only rated PG it is a movie that many people would find entertaining.
