The first installment in cinema's most famous series was a worldwide phenomenon in the months leading up to its release and quickly became one of the biggest box-office hits ever. The Phantom Menace is set decades before the original series, in the era of the Republic. The story follows the conflict over Naboo, a peaceful planet governed by Queen Amidala (Portman) and threatened by the Trade Federation, puppets of the evil Sith. The Jedi Knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (McGregor) must save the planet, with the help of the prodigal young Anakin Skywalker and the computer-generated Jar Jar Binks. Meanwhile the Sith, in the form of the vicious Darth Maul, scheme to destroy the Jedi and control the Republic. To be followed by two more sequels.
Directed by George Lucas - Rated PG
As an avid Star Wars fanatic, it took to this movie with great intrest. I found it to be a perfect prequel, since it fits the story very well. I was overly impressed with the many hidden messages they put into the script that is evidence to later events. I was also impressed by Liam Neeson. At first, I was a bit angered that he was going to be a Jedi, but I found his role to be well played and interesting. My favorite addition to this film was Darth Maul, played by the incredible Ray Park. Though, I almost cried after the beautiful lightsaber battle, when Obi-Wan cut our beloved Sith Lord in half. Sad, but nevertheless, this was an excellent film. "The best movie in the galaxy!" "A movie with real force!"
