Alexandra Ripley was born on January 8, 1934 in Charleston, South Carolina. She attended Vassar College on a scholarship from The United Daughters of the Confederacy. She married Leonard Ripley in 1958, but was divorced in 1963. She married her current husband, John Graham, in 1981. Ripley was authorized by two of Margaret Mitchell's nephews to write the novel, even though Mitchell had opposed the writing of one.Scarlett was released on September 25, 1991. Ripley presently resides in Charlottesville Virginia with her husband and two daughters.
