GODZILLA

Rebirth of a Legend

By David McAvoy

Introduction

The year is 1986. Japan has enjoyed relative peace since World War 2. The only deployment of S.D.F. forcess was when Godzilla attacked Japan in 1954. Godzilla was destroyed by the Oxygen Destroyer and Japan was rebuilt. Today, Godzilla is in his grave at the bottom of Tokyo Bay, never to rise again...

Japan-1986

Yuki Musaki, a young colledge student was hitting the books at 1:38 a.m. Her research topic was going well, she had decided to write about the one topic that had always interested her-Godzilla. Yuki looked at the clock, and decided it was time to head home. As she walked along the streets, she heard footstoops, someone was running her way. "Hey you! Stop theif!" Yuki turned around and a young man crashed into her, knocking her to the ground and sending her bag flying. Yuki turned jumped up and grabbed her bag, than turned to see the man who had ran into her. He had grabbed his bag and was stumbling to get away. "Stop that man!" Yuki reached out and grabbed his shoulder without thinking. He jumped, and than Yuki saw his face. The man's face seemed to be decaying, he looked like pictures she had seen of Lyprics. The man got to his feet and ran as fast as he could, disappearing down a dark allie. "Damn it! Hey you, did you see his face?" Yuki turned to face the man who spoke, he gave her the impression of pure evil. "Did you see his face?" Yuki considered this and decided to trust her instincts and lie to this man. "Oh,...uh...no, I'm sorry. He didn't stop running." The man seemed satisfied with this. "Which way did he run too?" "That way," Yuki pointed out, "Down that allie." The man just ran off without saying anything, and Yuki went on her way.

When Yuki returned home, she suddenly relized that she had the bag the man had dropped. "Damn, that theif has my paper!" Her curiosity took over, and Yuki opened the bag, inside was a green notebook. Opening it, she found it was an enormous documentation about Godzilla. Yuki read on, noting things down as she went. It had a lot of theory's on Godzilla's inner workings, his origins, but most interesting of all was the possibility of Godzilla being able to regenerate. As she read on, she kept wondering where the notebook had come from, who those strange men where, and what had happened to the theif. Than she stopped reading, and dropped the notebook, horrified. According to it, a Soviet sub. was sank in the Yellow Sea. According to the only surviver, a dinosaur had attacked it with blue light. Godzilla had returned.

Godzilla Returns

Yuki used the notebook the next day instead of her paper, but then again what choice did she have. Yuki walked down the street that night, with a lot on her mind to say the least. "Do you have it?!" Yuki turned, it was the theif from the night before. "Do you have it, please say you have it." "You...you mean that notebook." "Yes." "Its not yours, you stole it." "They're not going to tell anyone, Godzilla will kill us all and they don't care." "Who?" "They torchered me because I know...they gave me this disease." "Your talking in riddles, who did this? Where did that book come from? Who are you?" "I'm Shiro, I used to work for the government and...we can't talk here, come with me." Yuki followed Shiro to an old apartment in down town Tokyo. Shiro knocked on the door and an old woman let them in. "Mother, this is the girl who got the book." "Do you have it?" "No I turned it in, you have my paper you see and..." "We know Yuki, we read your paper." "Listen to me Yuki, the government knows Godzilla is going to return, and aren't going to tell anyone. He leveled Tokyo in a single night and they'll let him do it again. I found out and threatened to go to the press, they threatened me, and than they used me as a guinea pig, look what they did to me Yuki-whats happened to me is nothing, we have to stop Godzilla before he attacks." Shiro's mother approached them. "I lost my family when Godzilla attacked, I won't loose Shiro."

Yuki managed to get the notebook back, with a big A- stamped on it though. She took it to Shiro that night who just tore the contents free and went on. Yuki carried the papers to the press. The next day, all of Japan heard that Godzilla was alive. The government managed to pass it off as a rumor, but not for long.

In Yokohama, a young boy was playing with his toy cars. Suddenly the cars bounced. They bounced again. Than the whole ground shook. The boy looked up. Godzilla had rissen out of the harbor. Godzilla roared and begin to march through the city. Buildings fell, people trampled each other in a panic, annoyed by the screaming of the crowds Godzilla's turned his attention to them. His fins glew blue and than BOOOOM! People where launched into the air and than melted into nothing for blocks. A huge skyscraper cought on fire and than collapsed onto the people below. Godzilla's tail caught another building and it toppled into another, killing everyone inside. Godzilla plowed through the streets, knocking over buildings as if they where toys. Godzilla turned his attention to the people inside a building, and fired his atomic breath upon them when they screamed. A huge hole appeared in the building and the one behind it. Both buildings than burst into flames. All across Yokohama, people panicked and tried to flea. In the street, a young boy, seperated from his mother, cried clutching his toy cars. He looked up, in time to see the reminants of a building come crashing down. Godzilla left Yokohama, after causing thousands of casualties and an enormous amount of distruction. As rescue workers shifted through the wreckage, they unearthed the corpse of a little boy, still clutching his toy car.

Aftermath

Now the government couldn't deny Godzilla's existance, but what could kill Godzilla? The H-Bomb was considered and ruled out as it was too devastating itself. Finally, it was decided an air strike would be used to lure Godzilla into the open ocean. "Godzilla seems to be abit bigger than he was in 1954," Shiro's mother pointed out, "and his atomic breath is much stronger." Yuki couldn't beleive this was happening. "I thought Godzilla was killed by the Oxygen Destroyer? How could he have survived?" Shiro's mother didn't remove her eyes from the tv screen, "Godzilla is death itself.", she commented. Shiro was flipping through a book about the mythology of Oto Island. "Here's something on Godzilla: Godzilla is the incarnation of a diety of nature, the natural order of things. Godzilla demands to be respected, those who fail to do so die. According to this, Godzilla is one of three ancient beings-Godzilla, the incarnation of nature and either the ally or enemy of humanity depending on the actions taken by mankind; Onoko, the defender of humanity; and Ghidorah, the incarnation of mankind's sins." Yuki stared out the window for a minute. "Do you think the others could be real Shiro, since Godzilla is?" Shiro thought about this for a moment. "Maybe. Lets see...Onoko is said to be sleeping in the ice of the holy mountain on the sacred islands. Hmm...I beleive that may mean Mt. Fuji. Ghidorah is absorbing the sins of humanity and is waiting to awaken. Currently he sleeps in the stone of heaven on the northern most isle, that may be in Hokkiado." All this time Shiro's mother sat in front of the tv. "Godzilla has returned, to kill again."

The Demon King

The Shinto priest made his way to the sacred shrine. As he did he past the "sky stone" as the village called it which was said to house the demons of hell. Ofcourse, he no longer beleived in such things and only did the rituals as it was expected of him. Something was differant though, birds where not chirping, no fish in the stream, nothing, not even a cricket chirping. Suddenly, a young man clutching a bag ran by. The priest looked at the path and saw an old woman lying on the ground, the man had hit her and stolen her bag. The priest grabbed him, determined to stop him, but the man turned, pulled out a gun and fired. The priest fell, and landed on the sky stone. According to legend, when innocent blood fell on the sky stone the Demon King would be freed from within. But this was only a legend, but so was Godzilla untill 1954. The stone cracked, a toxic cloud of smoke came from the crack. The stone exploded and a ray of light fired into the sky where it transformed into a giant three-headed dragon. Ghidorah was free. Ghidorah landed on the ground, and lowered its center head to look the murderer eye to eye. The beast owed the man his existance, and it was going to repay him. It stuck out its forked tongue, the man too scared to move, and licked him like a dog would its master. The man looked into the monster's eyes, and than felt a great pain as if he was being tore from his body. His soul was than ripped out of his corpse, and sucked into the dragon. He was the first of many souls to become part of the demon. Ghidorah flew over the village, and absorbed all the poor souls living there, taking their life energy as his own. Only one scarred old woman survived, and she babbled to the police that the legends where true. What legends, she couldn't bare to say.

Ghidorah Attacks! Onoko Awakens!

It was 11:38 when the sound was first heard over Sapporo. Than, a huge dragon landed in the middle of the city. No one could beleive it. Ghidorah looked down on the people of the city and screeched. Ghidorah flew into the air and begin to fly over the buildings, sucking up souls as he went. Withing thirty minutes, Sapporo was a grave yard. The S.D.F. had allready faced Godzilla at sea, and failed to inflict any visable damage. They would not have two monsters destroying Japan. The S.D.F. and Ghidorah met in the air above the Hokkiado country side. First, the jets attempted to shoot the monster out of the sky. The missiles all hit, but had no effect. Ghidorah landed, and bright lights glew in its mouths. Than three bolts of light errupted forth and destroyed jets, tanks, soldiers, everything. Ghidorah flew back into the air and went on unmolested.

"That's Ghidorah, I'm sure of it!", Shiro said as he, his mother, and Yuki watched the attack on tv. "Another demon released on the world." replied his mother. "We have Godzilla and now Ghidorah, what will we have to do to end this?" Yuki thought for a minute. "Shiro, didn't you say that Ghidorah was evil and Godzilla was nature?" "Yes, why?" "Wasn't there a defender of humanity-Onoko?" Shiro looked at her, contemplating what she was thinking. "Yes." "Do you think we could awaken Onoko and have him fight Ghidorah and Godzilla?" At this Shiro's mother snapped out of her usual trance. "Are you suggesting we unleash a third devil to torment us?" Yuki shook her head. "No. Shiro, tell us about Onoko." Shiro got the old book down and begin to read. "Onoko is the guardian of humanity, destined to face Ghidorah. Onoko will be controled by an amber with a serpent's fang inside. Whoever holds this stone, controls Onoko. It also says Onoko is mortal, Ghidorah can be destroyed-temporarily, and Godzilla is immortal." Shiro's mother came to his side. "My boy, think of your health. Rest." Shiro was almost shouting now, unintentionally. "No mother I'm fine. The disease isn't fatal." Yuki remembered that the government had used Shiro as a guinea pig untill he had escaped, leaving his face scarred but strengthening his soul. "Mother, you have a stone like that don't you." Shiro's mother shook her head. "Yes I do, but I will not awaken Onoko." "Mother, if that is the case, than I will." Shiro walked to a cabinet and pulled out a shining stone with a fang in it. "Yuki, we're going to Fuji." Shiro's mother came to their side. "Shiro, Yuki, if you must go, than use Onoko to kill Ghidorah and Godzilla." Shiro nodded, "We will."

Three days later, Shiro held the stone to an abandoned Shinto shrine and recited an ancient poem:

"The Demon King is born, the wrathful god awoken,

Arise now oh guardian lion, Onoko! Hear me now!

Defend us from the evil we have brought upon our selves,

Give us the mercy we do not deserve oh gods of the holy isles."

By now everyone presant was starring at Shiro who felt a little embarrased. "Look! The snow is melting!" Everyone looked to the top of Fuji to see the ice slide away, and than a giant creature emerged. Onoko had a lion like face. A small frill lined his head and than rows of spikes ran down his back. His crocodile like body slid out of the ice and he roared revealing his fangs. Everyone screamed and ran from the mountain. "Now we can stop Godzilla and Ghidorah, with Onoko."

Godzilla vs. Onoko

Godzilla was marching toward Fuji. He had felt the presense of Ghidorah and now Onoko. Onoko felt Godzilla's presence as well. Shiro and Yuki watched as the two titans approached each other. As they did, Shiro felt that the odds where in Godzilla's favor. After all, Godzilla stood at about 60 meters, had regenerative powers, and the atomic breath. Onoko barely reached 30 meters. Onoko and Godzilla roared at each other, challenging. Onoko lept from the ground and lunged at Godzilla. With surprising speed Godzilla dodged to the side and than seemed to laugh at this foe. Onoko turned, and launched himself off the ground, only to be knocked down by a blast of atomic breath. Onoko was on its feet immediantly, and met a charging Godzilla. Onoko bit into Godzilla's hand, and blood begin to run down it. Godzilla shook himself free, but Onoko had a surprise for Godzilla. The lion-beast had its own beam, a bright read light fired from its mouth and hit Godzilla in the face. Godzilla was temporarily blinded by the flash and Onoko took this time to knock the king of the monsters off his feet. Godzilla retalliated with a headbutt to Onoko's jaw, which caused the beast to stagger backwards. Godzilla was on his feet, his wounds fully healed. Onoko lunged at Godzilla again, and was knocked to the ground. Godzilla's spines glowed. Godzilla lowered to Onoko's level and fired a few meters from Onoko's face. The blast was strong enough to burst Onoko's left eye. The defender of humanity retreated, to heal its wounds, and Godzilla returned to the sea.

Good vs. Evil

Two days had passed since Godzilla and Onoko had fought when the S.D.F. learned Ghidorah and Onoko where running a path that intercepted each other. Diety and demon met just outside Tokyo for a battle that may decide the future for mankind. Yuki noted that if Onoko stood so small a chance against Godzilla, he was even more outmatched by Ghidorah. Ghidorah was far larger than Onoko, about 120 meters, and was twice the size of Godzilla. "According to legend he's been feeding off of all the evil and hate. Look at the world today and you'll see why he's so powerful." was Shiro's remark. Onoko charged at Ghidorah, but was chased off by the light rays. Ghidorah was playing with Onoko, teasing it before it died. Onoko fired its beam at Ghidorah, only to see it had little effect. Onoko lunged, and was blasted. "Ghidorah feeds off the evil, Onoko must feed off the good. There's so little good left in the world that he doesn't have enough power to stop Ghidorah.", Yuki observed. Onoko made one last attempt to hold Ghidorah with his beam, and it failed. Ghidorah toppled Onoko and dug into its chest with his talons. Ghidorah's three heads leaned forward and sank their teeth into Onoko's throat. Onoko twitched and proceeded to die as Ghidorah flew into Tokyo.

Final Conflict

All faiths across the world have somesort of disaster bringing intity. The "serpent" or "dragon" from the book of revelations. Tiamaat from Persia. The Midgard Serpent of Norse mythology. All lead to one idea, an evil intity of great destructive power-Ghidorah.

In the depths of the Pacific, Godzilla stirred and headed for Tokyo. In the city itself, Ghidorah absorbed the souls of innocent people. No one was innocent in its mind. They where all to join with it and bring it to perfection. Godzilla appeared in Tokyo harbor, he was headed for Ghidorah. Shiro and Yuki watched as the two monsters sized each other up. Someone else was watching. The man who had given Yuki the feeling of evil. The man who wanted to kill Shiro. He was a government agent, convinced Shiro was a traitor to his government.

Ghidorah pelted Godzilla with its beams, over and over again. Godzilla staggered but regained its footing and fired on Ghidorah. The effect was that Ghidorah toppled backwards, onto its back. "Ghidorah's grounded, I don't think he can get up from that position." Shiro stated firmly. Contrary to Shiro's thought, Ghidorah could get up and did so with ease. Godzilla and Ghidorah entered what can only be discribed as a "beam war" which ended with Ghidorah falling again. "This is it Shiro. Ghidorah will die now and we'll be saved...by Godzilla." Yuki was practically cheering Godzilla on. "To think that "he" would save us. Ironic isn't it." The agent who had been waiting for his cue stepped in, "Not as ironic as me finding you here." Yuki and Shiro turned to face him, but said nothing when they did. The agent walked forward, put a gun to the unarmed Shiro's head and said, "Die traitor." Suddenly part of the building collapsed due to the on going battle and the agent fell to his death.

***********************************************************************

King Ghidorah

Ghidorah got to its feet. It was bleeding, badly. Godzilla roared in triumph. He was about to kill Ghidorah. Ghidorah had one last trick though-it raised its head and begin to absorb hate, precious hate. The hate humanity had for Godzilla. Ghidorah begin to evolve. Its wounds healed and its power increased. It had become King Ghidorah. King Ghidorah fired its beams again, but they where now purple instead of yellowish, and they where very powerful. Godzilla could barely stand up to these beams, In fact, Godzilla actually fell in battle for the time being. King Ghidorah than turned on Tokyo, but something fired a beam at him. It was Onoko, the good in humanity and been revived enough by this battle to restore some of his power. King Ghidorah attacked Onoko and tore into his throat. The dragon's center head pointed into Onoko's mouth and fired. Foam errupted out of the lion-guardian's mouth, and than it died. Suddenly, a beam severed King Ghidorah's center head. Godzilla was strong again.

Godzilla fired over and over again untill Ghidorah exploded. As the flames burnt the ground at King Ghidorah's final resting place millions of souls where freed from within to go to there graves in peace. Out of the fire came a transparant figure, a huge black bat. No, a three- headed dragon. Ghidorah would return someday.

***********************************************************************

Conclusion

Yuki couldn't help but wonder as Godzilla went back out to sea. "So is Godzilla a living god?" Shiro shook his head. "I've read the governments explanation, and I don't think so. He was made by our radiation, but you could say he was nature striking back." Yuki was dumb struck. "But Ghidorah and Onoko, they were...Godzilla was part of the legend!?" Shiro shrugged, "Humanity interprets strange things in strange ways. Look at us, we thought Godzilla was evil because he attacked us, did what nature told him to do, but he wasn't evil. Ghidorah was evil, not Godzilla. He is nature, what isn't always right by our standards, but what is right naturally."
