**1/2 The Big Bug has Been Reborn Once Again

Now that the Heisei Godzilla series is over with, Toho decided to do a series on Mothra. Filling in the gap left by the change in Gamera, they made it a silly little kiddy movie.

All right, lets make it short. Desghidorah is a big bad rip-off of King Ghidorah who likes to suck the life out of trees. He is released, kills the old Mothra (the one from the Heisei Godzilla movies), and then gets his (their?), butt wooped by the next generation.

I don't hold too much respect for this one. The special effects are pretty darn good for the most part, and there is a lot of them. The plot has it's good parts, but the main thing that drives me nuts is those darn whinny brats of kids in this movie and all that stupid singing! OK, so the singing has improved but not the kids! I don't know where they came from; other mothra movies never had that much kid scenes in it. It looks more like something out of old Gamera movies then it does from mothra. I'm withering in pain on the floor while waiting for the Mothra scenes to start! Having a double movie effect in some movie is OK, but not when there is whiny kids and almost as whiny adults to fill in the gap! Oh yeah, and did I mention that Desghidorah is a pathetic rip-off of King Ghidora? Plus the part where is good in the first battle and lame in the second makes for one stupid inconsistent monster. Not only that but, but he is not a very good destroyer (worse damage total of Toho monsters: 0 people killed, 1 building destroyed, and not directly by him.). Not a very good monster if you ask me.

There is one redeeming quality that makes this movie a 2.5 rather than a two: that one spiffy "miniature dog-fight" between the "mini-monsters". Sure, causing all that property destruction is a little annoying (I hope their insured!), but it still looks coll. Anyways, if you are a little kid or somebody that absolutely loves Mothra, go right ahead and get this one. Be forewarned thought: you thought the kids where whiny in old Gamera movies, well, these brats are even worse!
