Mothra

*** 1/2 Don't Mess With Mothra!

For some odd reason, Toho decided to make a movie about a giant moth. For an even odder reason, they also came up with a couple of foot high girls who could sing a song to control the moth. Yep, this movie is a little odd.

Infant Island has been hit with atomic testing. After the fact, they find that the place is inhabited (oops!). Some goof named Nelson (first name or last name? I don't know), decides to kidnap two small foot-high girls found there (Ailenas, I think), and then he exploits them. A giant egg his hatched, and Mothra pops out. It destroys Tokyo, and then heads for the Ailenas, who are with Nelson in some country that I forgot the name of. After the Ailenas are taken back, the big bug is calmed down with a big symbol and church bells.

When I was searching the internet, I found absoutly nutin' on this movie. I think I'm the only person to review this movie for internet purposes. Forgive me if I don't say much info, because there is no place for me to get it. Anyways, this is a pretty good movie. The plot is great, as odd as it may be. The things mentioned are reminiscent of Gorgo, but seeing as both were made at the exact same time, neither is a rip-off. There are a lot of special effects here; most of the movie is spent on Mothra destroying stuff. It is also one of the few Toho movies that have a monster destroy a city outside of Japan (I don't know where, but it is some type of made-up country). The special effects are great; it even has mat paintings (a rarity in Toho movies). However, the parts where they take one scene and slap it on another (I think it's called "superimposing"), is really lame (it looks green). Ironically, it's used extensively here. Also, the Ailenas twins are obviously little dolls at times.

Well, as a whole, it's a pretty good classic movie. I'm surprised that nobody else reviewed this one. My video cover says that it's "A science-fiction classic!", and it is. If you like Mothra or not, it's still a good giant monster movie. If you like giant monsters or even just Godzilla himself, you would be missing out if you don't see this one.
