Kraa! The Sea Monster

*** Giant Alien Semi-Aquatic Monster vs. Space Teenagers!
From the same people that brought you "Zarkorr! The Invader" comes another cheap video movie! Unfortunately this would be, as far as I know, the last one as well (or perhaps maybe it is fortunate). Still, you do get a giant monster played by a guy in a rubber suit trashing model cities, and that I guess is good enough in itself.
A certain evil warlord fellow called, of all things, Lord Doom, is sick and tired of ruling over a cold dying planet (Proyas). So he hires intergalactic monster-for-hire, Kraa, a sea monster of sorts that just loves to stomp things. The only thing standing in Doom’s way is the Planet Patrol, a group of teenagers living in a space station outpost that looks suspiciously like the Death Star. One good blast latter and they are no longer a problem (as if you could believe that). Luckily they sent one of their operatives, a rather slimy looking alien that accidentally gave himself a bad Italian accent because he originally was suppose to land at a nuclear research lab in Italy. The little alien is sent off-course for reasons unknown and instead lands in a dinner, were he befriends the owner and one of the customers. With their help (and no thanks to the "men-in-black" types), they build a super-gun at the local nuclear power plant and zap Kraa. The Planet Patrol, having fixed their space station, then go to the planet Proyas to lay the smack down on Lord Doom (I can’t believe I just said that).
The good news about the rather silly plot is that the movie really is quite entertaining. There is a lot of humor in it, both intentional and unintentional, and as long as you can get into that "little kid" frame of mind, you’ll probably enjoy the movie. Most of the Earth-based characters, especially Mogyar the alien, are interesting in their own rights and the team behind that portion of the story did a good job in my opinion. The portion about the Planet Patrol, apparently filmed separately, feels quite out-of-place and uses people that were probably rejected by their receptive high school drama clubs. Not quite the Science Patrol, nor are they the Power Rangers, in fact they are generally quite useless at their job with the exception of getting into a fist fight with the main bad guy. This "movie" probably would have been better if they just stuck to one plot, because the two plots don’t coincide very well.
The third plot is Kraa himself, which I guess was filmed separately as well. Still, the whole suitamation portion of the movie was done fairly well, with all the special effects wisdom they’ve gained over the (few) years. You have Kraa knocking over power lines, getting smacked in the back by a renegade saucer, shoot things randomly with his sonic beam thingy, and have a rather interesting scene involving the statue mascot of a tire store. You also witness Kraa destroy a movie theatre showing "Zarkorr! The Invader" as well as a giant poster for "Godzilla" (released the same year). Overall it’s good old-school monster action with a creature that doesn’t really act like a sea monster.
It’s hard not to compare this movie to "Zarkorr! The Invader", especially when there is the occasional stock-footage from that movie. Overall "Kraa! The Sea Monster" is better with a more entertaining plot, better monster trashing scenes, an increased amount of monster trashing scenes, and a better connection between human and monster scenes. However, the movie also suffers from the same problems, such as editing issues and a monster that moves way to slow to be interesting. Oh well, it’s still a decent movie if you find it for cheap (which is rather easy).

There is a giant gun pointed at a huge rampaging monster and you are trying to stop them? Some government agent you are.
