King Kong Lives

*** It’s Alive, It’s Alive!!!

Probably riding the wave from a recent Godzilla movie, they decided to make another King Kong movie. Following movie tradition, it wasn’t as good as the original it was based on.

Miraculously, King Kong survived his fateful plunge by way of modern medicine. He has been in a coma for 10 years, and in desperate need of a new heart. In order to survive a mechanical heart transplant surgery, he needs a blood transfusion. Luckily, a female Kong was recently found and transported there. After the surgery, Kong escapes (again! When will they learn a proper way to restrain the guy?), and runs off with Lady Kong. For some reason, the military wants to recapture Lady Kong and kill King Kong. They succeed, but somehow Kong survives, and three months later, comes back to rescue Lady Kong, who is now pregnant. The military goes after him, but Kong destroys most of it. After the birth of his son, Kong’s mechanical heart gives out because they control device was destroyed. Lady Kong and Kong Jr. are put in a preserve.

Even more than then the last one, this is one of those movies that some people hate and others love. In fact, only severe fans of King Kong will like this movie. Unlike the first one, this movie is less of an allegory and more of a traditional monster movie. It is more of a military vs. a big animal movie than an adventure. It has a few scenes that are quite lame, and a couple of plot holes. It even had a major slowdown in the middle of the movie, which is rarely fun. They main problem with the movie, however, is the lack of reason on the part of the military guys. Who were these people and why were they doing this? Why did they want to kill Kong but capture Lady Kong. Why why why? It never was explained.

For a very long time, this was the only King Kong movie I have watched. It was the only one I could find as a kid. Even though I don’t think it is as good now, I still like it. The special effects were pretty good, slightly better than the last one. Even though they didn’t spend any time in a major city, it had it’s share of destruction. The climax where Kong destroys the military vehicles was very good. It had a bit of a surreal effect on it. Also, for once, the love story elements are confined to the same species. They were also done better, because instead of repeated ogling on the part of Kong, he does a bit more stuff with his own species. It keeps it from getting as boring. The allegory about human stupidity and military action was done pretty well too. It didn’t spend an excessive amount of time on it, which let’s them do other things.

Although most people hate this movie, I personally enjoyed it. It really is for serious Kong fans only, but if you like the 76 King Kong, go ahead and watch it. It has a lot of good parts to cover up the bad.
