King Kong

***** The Original Monster Movie!

The RKO movie company was going broke. The needed a high grossing movie to save them. Their answer: King Kong. It became a smash hit, the first "Blockbuster". It was extremely popular back then, and now, it’s a classic.

A movie maker guy wanted to make a movie about giant, legendary animals. He got a girl to be the star of the movie, and headed off to a strange, tropical island. They met the natives there, and they wanted the girl they brought to be the sacrifice to Kong. They took her, and let Kong kidnap her. The crew went to rescue her, and met dangers like a Stegosaurus, a Brontosaurus(yeah, I know, Apatosaurus, but that’s what it was called then), and a log over a big canyon that Kong pushed off with them on it(there were man-eating spiders down there, but that scene was cut.). Meanwhile, Kong battles a T-Rex, an Elasmosaurus, and a Pteranodon. At the third battle, the destraction allows the girl and the last surviving sailor guy to escape. Kong runs back to the village after them, makes a mess, and is captured. They could have ended the movie there, and it would have vanished into obscurity, but then they brought the guy to New York, and the movie really picked up the pace. Kong escapes, captures the girl, and climbs up the Empire State Building. He is shot down by a bunch of biplanes, and falls off. "It was beauty killed the beast.".

This is a classic. How many other monster movies are on classic movie channels? How many other monster movies made their way into history books and encyclopedias? How many other monster movies can define America in the 1930’s. Not much as far as I know! This movie is the granddaddy of all monster movies. In order to start a trend, the first one has to be very good. This one was not only a good monster movie, but a good one as a movie itself. It holds one of the best plots of any monster movie. Although the plot is great, it’s not what drew people in to see it back in the thirty’s, it’s the special effects. It has special effects that were unmatched for over 30 years! I’ve always liked stop motion movies, and this is one of the better ones. Kong and all the rest of the creatures look very good, almost believable. Actually, it was believable when it was made. The terrific special effects have created some of the most memorable scenes in movie history.

The movie isn’t perfic, though. There is a lot of weird moments, but most can be written off cause of generation gap. My one complaint is the dinosaurs. OK, I can understand that they had no choice to put in some dinos that were laying around in storage. All right, they were done very well and the Kong vs. T-Rex match was one of the better matches in movie history(even though it was the first involving something other than a dinosaur or a mythical creature). But no matter what excuse you come up with, the fact remains that the dinosaurs didn’t fit. For one thing, the explorer people cared only for a big gorilla, and barely even acnoledged the dinosaurs they were killing and being killed by. Also, the dinosaurs really took away from the main concept-Kong himself. They destraced the viewer from the main monster. Also, they had one to many Kong vs. Dino fight. Kong really had a bad day that day, with three dino attacks and all. Anyways, the movie was still very good. I recommend this to anybody, monster movie fan or not. This is a true classic.
