Jurassic Park

*****         Best Dinosaur Movie Made So Far!

Dinosaurs were really popular in the late 80's. So, famed author, Michael Crichton made a book on them. Obviously, such a concept of dinosaurs was made into a movie. They through in Steven Spielberg and some of that new computer generation stuff, and ended up with a blockbuster.

Using a bunch of sophisticated cloning techniques (which don't exist, but hey, it's a sci-fi movie!), dinosaurs are revived to make one spiffy theme park. They get a bunch of "crash-test-dummies" to make sure the thing is fun and safe, and the dinosaurs obviously get loose. I guess bringing dinosaurs back wasn't such a smart idea! The dinosaurs stomp around, eat people, get eaten, and basically make wreak havoc. One little catch though, the special effects are good, the dinosaurs look real, and even though you've seen this before, you never seen it done this good. And it actually has a good human plot to glue it all together!

Basically, it's a realistic spin on an old concept. They dinosaurs are done really really well. OK, not that well, but this was during the old days if computer graphics, so what do you expect? But it is still really good. Not as good as some later movies like "Godzilla" (1998), but certainly better than "Star Wars I". But that’s just those computer graphics, the classic Spielberg animatronic techniques are prevalent, and they look better than ever! I heard that the movie was originally going to be made in stop motion. That would have been great, but with CGI, it is a little more realistic. Besides, it's a new thing, giving them more money. What did you expect? Anyways, the dinosaurs look extremely real, the most realistic portrayal of dinosaurs, ever (even better than the sequel). They run around, chase people, and eat them in a realistic, suspenseful, and rather scary fashion. But it still keeps it under control by putting "people-eating" behind bushes and cars and stuff like that. So it's scary in the mindset, not the gore. And to add to the scare is one of the best soundtracks of any movie. The music is great and the dinosaur roaring is good and realistic. And if you remember seeing this in the movie theater, you know that it is load too!

There has been a lot of dinosaur movies, but what usually makes them fall apart is a boring and stupid plot. This don't have that! The plot is very well done. It flows well, and has some of those allegories thrown in (don't mess with Mother Nature, leave the dinosaurs alone, birds are scary, don't market animals, money isn't the only thing, T-Rexes like eating lawyers). The characters all were done well, with good acting and the ability to make you care about them. I heard that the character development was lacking in this movie, but I don't see where they needed to be developed more. Besides, more character development means less dinosaurs, and that aint good.

There is a lot of dinosaurs here (tyrannosaurus rex, velociraptor, brachiosuarus, triceratops, gallimimus, dilophosaurus, parasaurolophus), and they are all done very well and very realistic. But this web site is devoted to giant monster movies, so why am I reviewing this? Well, for one, the dinosaurs, while being very realistic, are portrayed as monsters. They kill, eat, and destroy. Another is that the monstrous T-Rex, the start of the show, is definitely giant. Finally, they aren't all that realistic. For one, most is guesswork. Another is that in typical Hollywood fashion, they are larger than normal. Then again, there was a little irony in this movie. The velociraptors were huge, way larger than normal. But then, after the movie was made, the Utahraptor was found, proving that such a creature did exist. Seeing as the scientists in this movie didn't know about Utahraptor, they assumed that the creatures they made were Velociraptors. So, it is quite realistic, but I reviewed the movie anyways. Why? Because I like it!

This movie is great! If you have been living in a hole for the past ten years, than go and rent this movie! You probably won't be disappointed. Most people who say the movie wasn't all that good still think that the movie wasn't bad, because the special effects were extremely great. Sure, the plot may not be something major critic type people like, but the dinosaurs, the real reason to see this movie, are great. This movie is fun for all ages, go see it (unless you are a scarred easily 8 and under kid). As for the book, it sucked! It went in and out between being confusing, boring, and nauseating. It was dumb and gory. It even had a scene featuring a first hand account of a guy having his intestines fall out. Not very good at all. But the movie version, now that’s good. Much better. Go see it, it's fun and entertaining. One of the best movie ever made (there are three movies that I consider to be the best ones ever made. "Independence Day" and "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" are the other two. "Aliens" and "The Matrix" come close, but were disqualified because they were rated R).
