It Came From Beneath the Sea

1/2 It Came, It Saw, It got Blown Up!
Somebody at Columbia got this idea to make a movie about a giant octopus. He hired Ray Harryhausen, one of the best stop-motion special effects people around at the time, to do the octopus.
Something attacked one of those "new" nuclear submarines. Weeks of boring, mind numbing testing later, it was discovered to be a giant octopus. Nobody believes them, of course, until it comes up on land. It attacks San Francisco, including the Golden Gate Bridge. It then has its brain blown up by a special torpedo.
If you haven't noticed already, my reviews for bad movies usually are short. The plot is long, boring, mind numbing, doesn't flow right, has many flaws, idiotic, and just plain stupid. It has one of the most pathetic love scenes I have ever seen. It's also not original by far. Atomic tests spawn sea creature, creature isn't believed until coming to shore, it attacks a major city for no good reason, and then a special operation of shooting it with special projectile kills it. Sounds like the last movie to me. The special effects are very well done, but it doesn't look like a real octopus. No matter how good the stop motion, a stop motion octopus is not going to look real. The one in "King Kong vs. Godzilla" looked real, because it was real. This movie is bad in every way except quality of special effects work, which was expected.
However, it's so bad it's kind of good. Anybody who likes to laugh and make fun of pathetic old movies will love this one. It has an exaggerated version of all the clichés from the 50's monster movies. Including the painful ones, like a boring plot in the middle, but it's still fun to laugh at the pathetic parts. The octopus looks silly; it even has 6 legs instead of 8! Basically, if you’re an over serious person, don't watch it. If you like to laugh at disaster, watch it. If you like cool stop-motion but hate bad plots, fast-forward.
