Godzilla vs. Biollante

*** The New Series Has Only Just Begun.

With the success of Godzilla 1985, Toho decided to start the Godzilla series again. This series is very different from the original, but is still distinctively Godzilla. One main difference of the series is mainly evident in this one: special effects that are better but plots that are even more screwball.

I will keep this short because the plot is so screwy that it will take forever to explain it. Godzilla starts moving in his volcanic prison (Japanese not very surprised that he survived). They want to create Antinuclear Bacteria using G-cells. One of the scientists mixes G-cells and Rose cells together, combined with his daughter’s soul somehow, and Biollante is formed. A rival company accidentally realeased Godzilla through explosions at the volcano, and Godzilla comes out. He beats up Biollante, who escapes into space. He goes to Osaka, and destroys the Super X-2. He is injected by Antinuclear Bacteria, but he is cold-blooded so it don’t work. They try to raise his temperature through artificial lighting, but it don’t work. Biollante comes back bigger and bader, and ends up raising Godzilla’s temperature enough to start the bacteria growing. Biollante goes off, releases the daughter’s soul, and Godzilla goes face first in the ocean, which cools him off. Godzilla is alive but neutralized. He heads off to the ocean to rest. Yes, that was the short version. Watch it yourself, it is really complicated and screwball.

This movie has a screwy plot that can’t make up it’s mind if it wants to be a dramatic monster movie, a silly monster movie, or a lame action movie. It is dramatic at times, but not nearly as much as the last one. Other than that, it’s pretty good. The special effects are really good. Biollante was designed very well. If you look closely at the background, you will notice that the movie was very well made and spared no expenses. Even though the plot was screwball, at least it flowed correctly, exept for maybe the end. The Godzilla vs. Biollante and Super X-2 were also pretty good. The plot was bad, but the rest was very well made.

This movie sprang out a new series. The series goes on a very different attitude for Godzilla. Basically, Godzilla was turned into a not-very bright, really large, slow moving hermit crab that can’t do anything but spit out thermonuclear breath. The Miki Saegusa character and G-force were put in and will play out through the rest of the movies. Another trend is the annoying part of having buildings cause massive explosions right in front of Godzilla. Also, the main battles consist of nothing but projectile exchange. You guessed it, I don’t really like the concepts of the Hessia series. The plot and concepts are stupid in the series, but at least the special effects are good.

Despite it’s apparent lack of writing and directing talent, the special effects and quality work are really good. Obviously not up to American standards, but great for Godzilla movie standards. It can be a very good movie if you don’t care about plot. If you aren’t a serious plot-lover, go ahead and watch it. It will be fun.
